Hollywood laughs were in full swing Sunday night when Judd Apatow took the stage at the 83rd Golden Globes. The director and comedian opened up about a secret 10-year boycott of the awards — all because his comedy hit Trainwreck lost to Ridley Scott’s The Martian — and, of course, he had jokes about it.

“This is very surprising that I am here, because I’ve been boycotting the ceremony for about 10 years. A very quiet boycott, no one seems to have noticed,” Apatow said, to chuckles from the crowd. “We’ve had beef ever since my film ‘Trainwreck’ lost best comedy to Ridley Scott’s ‘The Martian.’”

He then went all in on Scott. “You know, Ridley Scott, America’s favorite comedy director. Director of such hilarious comedies as ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Alien,’” he quipped, drawing laughter.

Apatow also took a dig at Hollywood’s genre debates. “I can’t wait until later tonight when best comedy is won by ‘Hamnet,’” he joked, referencing the drama about William Shakespeare grieving his child.

But he didn’t stop at jokes. “But that’s water under the bridge. A lot has happened since then. That was 10 years ago. Since then we’ve had COVID. I believe we’re a dictatorship now. I’m still pretty focused on this ‘The Martian’ thing, I’ve got to be honest with you.”

Before presenting the award for Best Director, Apatow promised a little closure: “As an example to inspire America, I’m going to squash that beef and start the healing right now,” handing the trophy to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another.

Apatow’s funny, self-aware speech highlighted the ongoing Hollywood debate over what counts as comedy versus drama, with shows like The Bear and Abbott Elementary often competing across categories.

He’s no stranger to Globes recognition himself, having earned a nomination as co-writer of the original song “Walk Hard” from Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
