6. Mr. Queen
Sagueks (historical dramas) are another strong suit in the K-drama world, with the mettle to clinch high ratings thanks to their traditionally rich storytelling. While I was initially averse to this genre, it was the delightful gem, Mr. Queen, that changed my perspective. The acting chameleon, Shin Hye Sun, as an innocent Joseon queen whose body is hijacked by the soul of a 21st century playboy chef, truly delivers a once-in-a-lifetime performance opposite an equally charming Kim Jung Hyun. Their “no touch” chemistry alongside the past-present antics makes this show unskippable and a great way to enter the K-drama extravaganza.
7. Taxi Driver
Lee Je Hoon has a knack for playing complex, strong characters, but it’s his Kim Dogi avatar that will probably be the most cherished within his fandom. Taxi Driver is both devastating and enthralling as the Rainbow Taxi squad takes unlawful revenge against their wronged clients’ perperators. The fight scenes are spectacularly shot, but ultimately it is the heartbreaking backstories — inspired by real life cases — that will rip you apart. When vengeance is served, there’s unbridled satisfaction as a viewer.
