Indian Railways has electrified 99.6 per cent of its Broad Gauge network, bringing the country closer than ever to achieving full network electrification.
According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Railways, 70,002 route km (RKm) out of a total 70,271 RKm of Broad Gauge lines had been electrified as of May 31, 2026, taking overall coverage to 99.6 per cent.
The ministry said 25 states and Union Territories have already achieved complete electrification of their Broad Gauge railway network.
Only five states — Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Karnataka and Goa still have small sections awaiting completion, accounting for a combined 269 route km.
Rajasthan is closest to achieving full coverage, with only 10 km remaining out of its 6,514 km Broad Gauge network. Tamil Nadu has 68 km left to electrify, while Assam and Karnataka have 55 km and 120 km left to complete of their respective networks. Goa has only 16 km pending.
The ministry also noted that all newly sanctioned railway lines and capacity enhancement projects are now being planned with electrification from the outset.
Despite nearing full network electrification, the Railways noted that project completion remains dependent on several factors, including forest clearances, relocation of utility infrastructure, statutory approvals from various authorities, geological and topographical conditions, law and order situations at project sites, and weather-related constraints that can limit the number of working months available for construction in certain regions.
