‘Important’… Rio Ferdinand tells Man Utd fans huge Benjamin Sesko detail is being overlooked after Newcastle win

Rio Ferdinand has admitted that “there’s something” that stands out about summer signing Benjamin Sesko after the 1-0 win over Newcastle on Friday evening.

Benjamin Sesko has been Ruben Amorim’s preferred striking option in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign after his arrival from RB Leipzig back in the summer.

However, the 22-year-old Manchester United striker has not had an easy start to life at Old Trafford after his nominal goalscoring returns and setback from an injury.

Sesko missed a large chunk of the period between November and December after the Slovenian suffered a knee injury in United’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

The United summer signing has also only scored twice in 15 matches across all competitions in the current season since his initial £66.3m move from RB Leipzig.

What Rio Ferdinand has noticed about Benjamin Sesko after Man Utd’s encounter with Newcastle at Old Trafford

Benjamin Sesko opened his goalscoring account in Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford in September before netting against Sunderland at Old Trafford in October.

However, the Slovenia international has since struggled to make an impact in the final third and found that to be a similar case in United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

Sesko led the frontline for United against Newcastle in the Premier League match on Boxing Day and the former RB Leipzig ace only played 60 minutes at Old Trafford.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has said that Sesko’s impressive physicality would even make him not want to play against the striker on the pitch.

“They just need a scrappy goal,” he said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.

“He [Sesko] needs one of those scruffy goals that [is] going off his shin and the team get a bit of momentum.

“He needs a couple of factors to help him. I think the team has to start with him consistently and then him to get a little scruffy [sic] couple of goals and then he’d be on his way.

“I think there’s something there, I think, because physically, I wouldn’t want to play against him.”

Rio Ferdinand sends a message about Man Utd striker Benjamin Sesko after the Premier League result vs Newcastle

Joshua Zirkzee took Sesko’s place in the 60th minute of United’s hard-fought victory over Newcastle, with Ruben Amorim’s men climbing to fifth place in the table.

Sesko, who has one assist to his name in the current campaign, has now failed to score in his last seven Premier League matches for United.

Despite his goalscoring drought for the Red Devils, the Slovenia striker still has the full backing of United legend Ferdinand to overcome his rocky start at Old Trafford.

“He doesn’t look easy to play against physically and I think if you can get some good balls into him, that’s the key,” Ferdinand continued.

“I think getting some good ball into him, giving him those touches, I think that’s important for him. I wouldn’t give up on him now. Not at all. There’s [sic] loads to come from him, I think, still.

“But I think we have to give him the best chance. We have to put balls into the right areas. We have to play to his strengths. That’s what you do with your number nines.”

United striker Sesko has started eight of his 14 Premier League appearances since his big-money transfer to Old Trafford back in August.
