‘If Wishes Could Kill’ Mid-Credits Scene: Who Is “050201”? Is Si-Won’s Spirit Still There?

[Spoiler Alert] As it turns out, Netflix’s horror K-drama, If Wishes Could Kill, has a surprising mid-credits scene where we see Hyeong-Wook’s Discord buddy, Min-Woo, picking up an abandoned cellphone from the Seorin High School grounds. This cellphone was later revealed to be Lim Na-Ri’s mobile, which she had likely lost while sneaking into the school with Geon-woo at night. Actually, this was also the spot where Na-Ri was possessed by Kwon Si-Won’s spirit (the mastermind behind the cursed Girigo application), so probably, after the malevolent spirit took charge of her body, Na-Ri dropped her cellphone somewhere on the school grounds and lost track of it. However, you might be wondering how Min-Woo found out the exact whereabouts of Na-Ri’s lost phone and what he was going to do with it? So, the closing sequence of the show showed us that a mysterious Discord user, “050201,” had texted Min-Woo, asking him, “Why do you think Choi Hyeong-Wook died?” First of all, who was this Discord user? My guess is: it was Na-Ri, who’s still possessed by Si-Won’s spirit. The ending of the show didn’t reveal what happened to Na-Ri, or where exactly she is right now. The last we saw of her was inside the spirit realm, where Se-Ha bashed her quite brutally. The K-drama has established that if anyone gets hurt in the spirit world, then they develop the same wounds on their actual bodies. In short, if a person dies in the spirit realm, then they will meet the same fate in the real world. It’s possible that Na-Ri had been admitted to the hospital after Se-Ha beat her up, and this was the reason why we didn’t see her present in the school during the finale of the show. But yes, she’s still alive, and will likely return in the second season of If Wishes Could Kill.

Okay, so the reason why I believe Na-Ri is still under Si-Won’s control is that Na-Ri used Kwon Si-Won’s date of birth (February 1, 2005) as the username for her Discord ID. If it had been Na-Ri “herself” who wanted her phone back, then she would have used her own date of birth instead of Si-Won’s, right? Also, it doesn’t make any sense that Si-Won’s date of birth unlocked Na-Ri’s phone (unless it was cursed like Si-Won’s red phone). This may further imply that Na-Ri’s phone has become the new vessel for evil, or the new “maehyung” that connects the human world to the spirit realm. You might remember that the timer on Na-Ri’s phone stopped after Geon-woo’s wish was granted. However, Na-Ri still saw Si-Won’s ghost, which suggested that, by using the cursed app, she had made herself a part of the spirit world, and the only way to sever this connection was by destroying the maehyung (her phone). In simple words, as long as Na-Ri’s phone is still out there, Si-Won’s spirit will have its claws in her, and Si-Won will likely use Na-Ri to get back at her friends, Se-Ha and the rest of the gang.

Coming back to the mid-credits scene, it’s likely Na-Ri (under Si-Won’s control) who contacted Min-Woo to retrieve Na-Ri’s cellphone, which Si-Won’s spirit needs to spread her evil and regain her powers. My theory is: the more people end up using the cursed Girigo app, the more powerful Si-Won’s spirit is going to become. Well, that’s how all evil works, right? If you remember, in episode 4, Min-Woo told Se-Ha and her friends that they (he, Hyeong-Wook, and a few other Discord users) received a post about the Girigo app, which could make their wishes come true. The thing is, platforms like Discord allow its users to send anonymous messages without being traced. We know that Si-Won was a tech geek (at least when she was alive), so this could explain why Si-Won’s spirit had been using this online platform to share her cursed application with potential targets, who were nothing more desperate teenagers seeking a “one tap solution” for all their lives’ problems, that is, getting good grades, or making their crush fall in love with them. And this was the same way Si-Won’s spirit targeted Min-Woo.

I think Min-Woo held himself partly responsible for Hyeong-Wook’s suicide, which was why he so desperately wanted to know the real reason behind his death. So what Si-Won’s spirit did was exploit his curiosity and set a trap for him on Discord, promising to tell him everything about Hyeong-Wook’s death, but before that, he had to find something for her, Na-Ri’s missing cellphone. And despite everything he knew, the moment  Min-Woo noticed the Girigo app on Na-Ri’s phone, he couldn’t stop himself from opening the app to make a wish. That’s how evil works. It leads you into temptation, and by the time you realize that you have made a huge blunder, it’s too late. I am not sure what wish Min-Woo is going to make through this app, but it’s certain that his curiosity will bring him the same fate as his friend. Furthermore, Min-Woo may not be the only victim Si-Won’s spirit has targeted. It’s possible that she once again made a public post about her evil app, so more and more teenagers fall prey to it, making her spirit stronger and stronger, and once she’s powerful enough to unleash her vengeance on her enemies, she will likely return to Seorin High School (as Na-Ri) and make the lives of Se-Ha and her friends a living hell. Well, that’s what I believe is gonna happen in the next season of If Wishes Could Kill, but if you have any other crazy theories about the possible plot threads season 2 could follow, then do share them with me in the comments below.
