Ian Somerhalder is revealing more about getting out of his massive business debt with Nikki Reed.

The 47-year-old The Vampire Diaries alum got candid about getting into eight-figure debt with his 37-year-old Twilight alum wife due to a business deal gone sour.

Ian Somerhalder Says Business Deal “Came Crashing Down”

“I retired from acting seven years ago. I left an insanely lucrative career in television after financial upheaval from building a business that I didn’t build properly. And due to fraud, it put my wife and I into an eight-figure hole,” he told E! News in an interview, adding that it all “came crashing down” after making eight figures of personal guarantees to a bank for an unnamed clean energy company.

“Eight figures is a hard hole to climb out of. But Nikki and I did it. You know, she really negotiated us out of this deal but we sold houses, paintings, cars, watches, everything,” he explained.

Ian added that he “should have been retiring off of one of the biggest TV shows in the world” rather than “starting companies that were not gonna pay me possibly ever.”

As far as his current businesses, he and former co-star Paul Wesley launched a straight bourbon whiskey, Brother’s Bond Bourbon.

He also revealed his latest endeavor, inspired by navigating the world of business: becoming a pilot.

“I’ve just started learning how to be a pilot. You plan as much for when things don’t go right as then they do.”

He also provided advice for going into business with a spouse.

“Make it fun. Remember, it’s supposed to be fun. Find the beauty in all of it.”
