Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Pune Metro Set to Start Operations from June 15
Baner, 29th April 2026: The much-awaited Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line is scheduled to begin operations on June 15, with services to be rolled out in phases. In the initial phase, 12 stations will be opened to the public, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity between Pune’s IT hub and the city centre.
The stations set to become operational in the first phase include Megapolis Society, Quadron Business Park, Dohler, Infosys Phase 2, Wipro Technologies Phase 2, Pall India, Shivaji Chowk, Courtyard by Marriott, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium, Orchid Hotel, and Ramnagar.
Work on the remaining 11 stations is currently in progress, and officials expect them to be completed and opened by October. These include High Street, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Krushi Anusandhan, YASHADA, Savitribai Phule Pune University, RBI, Agriculture College, Shivajinagar, and District Court.
Once fully operational, the metro corridor is expected to significantly cut travel time between Hinjawadi and central Pune, offering relief to lakhs of daily commuters who currently face heavy traffic congestion on this busy route.
The phased rollout comes amid earlier demands from the Forum of IT Employees (FITE), which had urged authorities to open operational sections in stages to ease commuter pressure. In a representation submitted in September last year to then PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase, the group had proposed an early launch of the Hinjawadi Phase 3 to Baner stretch, citing advanced construction progress and urgent need for improved public transport. However, authorities had initially planned to inaugurate the entire corridor together after full completion, a timeline that was not met.
The Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line, also known as Pune Metro Line 3, spans 23.3 km and runs entirely on an elevated track from Hinjawadi’s Megapolis Circle to Civil Court in Shivajinagar. The project is being developed by a consortium led by Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited in partnership with Siemens under Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited.
Notably, the line will be the first in Pune to operate using a 750V DC third rail system, eliminating the need for overhead wires. The trains, supplied by Alstom, will consist of three-coach sets with a capacity of around 1,000 passengers each.
With partial operations set to begin, the project is expected to gradually transform daily commuting patterns in Pune’s western corridor while easing pressure on road networks.
