Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t a Republican, she says, despite what her own husband may think.
The “Marty Supreme” star, 53, clarified her political views in a June 2 episode of her “Goop Podcast” and joked about how they compare to her husband, Brad Falchuk.
“He’s so progressive,” she said before going on to add with a laugh, “I’m pretty centrist, and my husband thinks I’m a Republican − which, I’m not a Republican. I don’t feel anything right now, to be totally honest with you. I feel like I’m completely an independent.”
Paltrow made the point during a conversation with Trae Stephens, cofounder of the defense technology company Anduril Industries. While arguing in favor of mandatory civil service in the United States, he said “we’re all getting so tribal” in politics today and that solving problems in America won’t be possible without an “open, respectful dialogue.”

Paltrow said she couldn’t agree more, noting her husband “has such a sweet heart, and he wants to make sure everybody’s looked after,” but she sometimes finds herself urging him to listen to a viewpoint that differs from his.
“It is very triggering for people,” she said. “It’s become so binary, I think. I am trying to, in my journey through being an American right now, I guess sort of weave together lots of different points of view, and also to get out of that place of righteousness and anger and fear.”
The Oscar-winning actress has hosted Democratic fundraisers in the past, including one at her Los Angeles home in 2014 that former President Barack Obama attended. At the time, Paltrow told Obama she was “one of your biggest fans, if not the biggest,” according to Time magazine, which noted she had previously taped an ad for Obama in the 2008 election.
Paltrow also hosted a fundraiser for Democrat Pete Buttigieg in 2019.

But in a 2023 profile in the New York Times, Paltrow said she is “open-minded about everybody” and noted she had recently listened to a podcast featuring Robert F. Kennedy Jr., then an independent candidate for president. “It was very interesting to hear his point of view,” she said. The NYT reported a representative for Paltrow later reached out to express “concerns that her political views would be a focus of this article” and described the actress as an “independent thinker.”
In 2016, Paltrow reacted to the election of President Donald Trump by saying it was an “exciting time to be an American because we are at this amazing inflection point” where people were “tired of the status quo,” per Page Six. She added, “I’m not going to tell you what side I’m on, but my big takeaway was, ‘I really need to open my mind and understand better because I don’t.’ “
