There’s no shortage of shops willing to build you a seven-figure take on the air-cooled Porsche 911. And while the 964 generation seems to be the most popular starting point for these builds, the team at Gunther Werks are best known for their work with the 993. And while the brand technically wrapped up production of its open-top Speedster models back in 2023, one particularly, shall we say, marvelous customer has just commissioned a rather special car for the brand’s eight anniversary: the one-off Gunther Werks Turbo Speedster officially known as … Project Endgame.
Gunther Werks originally only ever planned to make 25 open-top Speedsters, which were all constructed between 2021–2023. Last year, the brand unveiled its latest project in the Turbo, which naturally straps a pair of turbochargers onto the Rothsport-built 4.0-liter flat-six found in the rear of every Gunther project. Only 75 Turbos are slated for production, making them a bit less rare than their predecessors. That said, the owner of this particular car clearly has some sway with the brand, as they agreed to make them a bespoke version of the Speedster sans roof. The end result is an 840-hp monster of a car that weighs a mere 2600 pounds. It will also remain the only open-top version of the Turbo.
“Project Endgame is unlike any Speedster we’ve built before, with every element precision-engineered and designed in absolute collaboration with the client,” Peter Nam, CEO and founder of Gunther Werks, said in a statement. “Even the most granular details were taken into account and refined. In this case, performance was paramount. At the client’s behest, Endgame will be the only Speedster powered by a turbocharged air-cooled engine, undoubtedly making it our fastest Speedster to date.”
Gunther Werks wasn’t interested in speaking to us about the person behind this car or its inspiration, but I’m sure we all have a pretty good idea. The name is clearly more than a hint, as is the paint job; the references to Marvel’s Iron Man are fairly extensive, all the way down to the bespoke jewelry that references the iconic suit of armor. Between the seats, you’ll find a replica arc reactor like the one that sits on Tony Stark’s chest [Actually, that’s an homage to the nanite housing enclosure used to store the Mark L and LXXXV suits seen in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame —Nerd Ed.], as well as a manual shifter with six colored gemstones mounted in the top that, as the press release puts it, makes “shifting a snap.”
So if the car doesn’t belong to Robert Downey Jr., it surely belongs to Marvel Studios powerhouses Kevin Feige or Jon Favreau. The latter’s own cars even featured in the early MCU films. Downey Jr. is also a well-known enthusiast, however, even hosting Downey’s Dream Cars on HBO Max. And let’s be frank: RDJ is Iron Man.
