Google is rolling out a new artificial intelligence-powered feature for its Google Photos platform that will allow users to build a digital wardrobe and virtually try on outfits directly from their photo gallery.
The feature, internally referred to as Wardrobe, draws comparisons to the virtual outfit-matching system seen in the film Clueless, where the protagonist could digitally mix and match clothing before deciding what to wear.
AI-powered wardrobe creation
In a blogpost announcing the update, Google stated that the Wardrobe feature will catalogue clothing items visible in users’ photos and create a digital closet accessible within the app. The system uses artificial intelligence to scan existing photo libraries, identify clothing items worn in past images and organise them into a dedicated wardrobe section.
The feature enables users to search and filter their wardrobe by categories such as tops, bottoms and jewellery, allowing them to easily browse and rediscover items that may no longer be in regular use.
Virtual try-ons and moodboards
Google stated that the update will also introduce a virtual try-on capability, allowing users to preview how selected clothing items would appear on them before physically wearing them.
Users will be able to mix and match outfits within the app, share combinations with others and save curated looks into digital moodboards. These moodboards can be organised for different occasions, including everyday workwear, weddings or travel.
Building on existing AI and AR efforts
The development builds on Google’s ongoing investments in artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Since 2023, the company has offered virtual try-on features across its platforms, including Search, Shopping and Images, enabling users to preview clothing items before making purchases.
Initially, the feature allowed users to select from a range of models to approximate fit and appearance. Google later expanded this capability to allow users to upload full-body images of themselves, enabling more personalised previews.
Rollout timeline
Google stated that the new Gemini-powered Wardrobe feature will begin rolling out to users this summer, with availability on Android devices first, followed by an iOS release.
The update signals a broader shift towards integrating AI-driven personalisation into everyday consumer apps, as companies increasingly explore ways to blend digital convenience with real-world decision-making.
