Google Maps AI Update Brings Ask Maps and 3D Navigation

Posted on

Google Maps has long been one of the most widely used navigation tools. Now, reports suggest the platform is preparing for a major transformation that goes beyond simple directions.

The update has gained attention after being highlighted by Indian Tech & Infra on X. Google is reportedly calling this its biggest update to Maps in more than a decade.

The changes are centred around two major features called Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation. Both features rely on Google’s Gemini AI technology.

Ask Maps is designed to answer real world questions through conversational queries. Users can ask things like where to find a phone charger nearby or which tennis courts are open with lights.

The feature also learns from previous searches and preferences. Based on this information, it can suggest places and directly help users with bookings or navigation.

Google says the feature is rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. The aim is to make planning daily activities faster and easier.

The second feature, Immersive Navigation, focuses on improving the driving experience. It introduces enhanced visuals such as 3D buildings, terrain and more detailed road information.

The system uses Street View and aerial imagery processed with Gemini AI. This allows the app to show clearer road layouts, including lanes, traffic signals and intersections.

Immersive Navigation also includes smart zoom features that highlight upcoming turns. It provides voice guidance and route comparisons such as toll roads versus traffic delays.

Drivers can also receive parking suggestions near their destination. The goal is to reduce confusion while navigating busy roads.

Support for the feature is expected to expand to CarPlay and Android Auto soon. This could make the update more useful for drivers using in car navigation systems.

For Indian users dealing with heavy traffic and complex road networks, the update could make daily commuting easier. However, its real impact will become clear only after regular users test it in everyday conditions.
