Google I/O 2026 Focuses On Android And AI

Posted on

Google has released the schedule for Google I/O, with a promise of unveiling Google’s biggest updates across AI, Android, Chrome, and Cloud.

The event kicks off with the opening keynote at 10:00 am PT on May 19, followed by the Developer keynote at 1:30 pm PT. The conference is a hybrid event using live video streaming to reach a worldwide audience while at the same time staging the keynotes in front of a live audience.

The live sessions are being held at  the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, which is described as its “back yard” due to its proximity to the Googleplex. Attendance is invitation-only with invites going to “press and partners.”

Google says that the agentic era of development is a key focus, with sessions highlighting how to “seamlessly transition from rapid ideation to orchestrating powerful, autonomous workflows, allowing AI to handle the heavy lifting while you focus on the big picture.”

Android development anywhere is another key area, along with building agentic web applications, with a new tools to build agent-ready web applications, automate complex debugging workflows, and ship highly interactive UI directly in the browser.

There’s a major session on what’s new in Android development, focusing on UI development with Jetpack Compose, improvements in developer productivity, and how to unlock additional form factors for your app. Android 17 improvements including performance improvements, new capabilities for media and camera apps, and new functionality for desktop and large screened apps will also be covered.

AI is pervasive across all the announced sessions, alongside a specific session focusing on Google’s end-to-end AI stack. This will explain the latest model capabilities across multimodal, media generation, and robotics, and how to make use of them using Google’s infrastructure. Google says whether developers are building intelligent agents, utilizing new vibe-coding tools, or tuning and serving open-source models, this session provides a clear understanding of the tools needed to build next-generation AI apps.

There’s also a more general session on “Build core skills to thrive as an AI-era developer” that will explore aspects such as the core engineering principles and business context needed to harness the full potential of AI. This considers how to use AI to change and accelerate how you build software.

Google I/O 2026 takes place on May 19 and 20. The keynote will be streamed online and can be watched without registration.
