Key Facts
It was revealed last weekend that Clooney, his wife Amal and their twin 8-year-olds were granted French citizenship after years of living on a farm and sending their children to school in the country.
Trump reacted to the development on Truth Social Wednesday, calling it “good news” and attacking Clooney’s support of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris before saying the actor “wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Clooney on Thursday issued a short response: “I totally agree with the current president,” he said. “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”
Clooney has long been a prominent supporter and fundraiser for the Democratic party and last April predicted Democrats would regain control of the House this year, calling on the party to “find some people to represent us better, who have a sense of humor and who have a sense of purpose.”
The actor supported Joe Biden in 2020 and in 2024 before writing a New York Times op-ed urging him to drop out of the race for president, which he did two weeks later, and later backing then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
In March, when Clooney called to defend press freedoms while promoting the state version of “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Trump called him a “second-rate movie star and failed political pundit.”

Key Background
Clooney, who has said he was raised a Democrat in the deeply red state of Kentucky, has been involved in politics and social causes for decades, both at home and abroad. He and his wife, a human rights attorney, co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2014 to provide legal help to victims of oppressive regimes. He has addressed the United Nations Security Council and called for political action against the violence in Darfur; called for former Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir to be taken to the International Criminal Court and co-founded Not On Our Watch, a nonprofit calling on influential people to bring awareness to mass atrocities around the world. He has helped to raise millions for Democratic candidates in the United States, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and dozens of state and local representatives. The Clooneys moved to their current home, a vineyard in southern France, in 2021. They bought the home for $10 million, according to the New York Times.

Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior minister at France’s Interior Ministry, reportedly criticized the French government for giving the Clooneys special treatment in the granting of their citizenship. “The message being sent is not good,” Vedrenne said in an interview with a French outlet. “There is an issue of fairness that, in my eyes, is absolutely essential.” The French government defended the move, saying the Clooneys “contribute, through their distinguished actions, to France’s international influence and cultural outreach.” The Foreign Ministry argued that France’s cinema industry will benefit from Clooney being a citizen and said the couple maintains “strong personal, professional and family ties with our country.”
