FSR 3.1 Got Ditched for PSSR 2.0 in 007 First Light’s PS5 Pro Version After 1-Day Integration Blew Devs Away

IO Interactive revealed on the official PlayStation Blog that their soon-to-be-released James Bond origin story game 007 First Light will launch with the new PSSR 2.0 algorithm on PlayStation 5 Pro. On other console platforms, the studio is using AMD FSR 3.1.5, but PSSR 2.0 offers significant visual improvements on the PS5 Pro hardware.

Henrik Schlichter, Technical Director at IO Interactive, said in a statement:

Upgraded PSSR gave us a meaningful jump in image quality across the board — cleaner, more stable, and noticeably sharper on the kind of fine detail that’s hardest to get right. It’s a clear upgrade for our PS5 Pro players.

Jon Rocatis, Principal Render Engineer at IO Interactive, added:

We integrated upgraded PSSR in about a day and were essentially happy with what we saw straight away. No per-scene tuning, no special-case work — it just held up across the whole game. That’s not something we get to say very often about a piece of new tech.

According to the developers, some of the most noticeable enhancements can be found in the dense foliage of outdoor environments and the close-up detail of character work in cinematic moments. The upgraded PSSR also substantially reduces shimmering and flickering artifacts, delivering a more cohesive image, especially in scenes packed with fine geometry and high-frequency detail.

On PC, of course, NVIDIA players will be able to activate DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and Dynamic Frame Generation, getting the best possible image quality (although path tracing and DLSS Ray Reconstruction have been sadly delayed to an update that will be released sometime this Summer). Still, there’s little doubt that the PS5 Pro version will be the best way to play 007 First Light on consoles.

The game will be released on May 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X, while the Nintendo Switch 2 version (which IO Interactive has promised is already in good shape) is coming at some point in Q3. For a complete roundup of 007 First Light info, head to our dedicated page.
