‘Fourth Wing’ Series Based on Rebecca Yarros Books Officially Happening
Prime Video is taking another huge swing in the fantasy realm.
The Amazon-owned streamer has greenlit Fourth Wing, a series based on author Rebecca Yarros’ mega-selling Empyrean romantasy novels; the show takes its title from the first book in the set. The project has been in development at Prime Video for about 2 1/2 years. Amazon MGM Studios is producing along with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society banner.
Fourth Wing, from Entangled Publishing, hit shelves in 2023 and quickly became a best seller, winning both positive reviews and a large fan base that spread word on the BookTok segment of TikTok and other social media. The next two installments in the planned five-book series, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, were also instant best sellers.
The story centers on Violet Sorrengail, whose plans for a quiet life are upended when her mother, a military general, orders her to join the brutal Basgiath War College and become one of several hundred candidates vying to become dragon riders.
Amazon MGM acquired rights to the book series in 2023 and began developing it with Outlier Society, which has an overall series deal with the studio. Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad, Anne With an E) was initially hired as showrunner but left the show last year. Locke & Key co-creator Meredith Averill took over as showrunner in September 2025.
Averill is executive producing with Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society; Yarros; Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films; and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark of Premeditated, Entangled Publishing’s sister company. Stefano Agosto, executive vp television at Outlier Society, is a co-EP.
