EXCLUSIVE: Farhan Akhtar in talks for Neeraj Pandey’s RD Burman biopic; actor to undergo extensive prep
After his transformative performances in films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Toofaan, Farhan Akhtar is now gearing up for another challenging role. Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the actor-filmmaker is in advanced talks with filmmaker Neeraj Pandey for a biopic on legendary music composer RD Burman, fondly known as Pancham Da.
According to sources, the film is envisioned as a grand tribute to one of India’s most celebrated musicians. “Neeraj Pandey has been developing the RD Burman biopic for a while now, and the writing work is progressing at a rapid pace. Farhan Akhtar is in talks to play the legendary composer and is extremely excited about the prospect of bringing Pancham Da’s journey to the big screen. If all goes according to plan, he will undergo extensive preparation to get into the skin of the character,” reveals a source.
The makers have also managed to secure the rights to several iconic RD Burman songs, which are expected to play a crucial role in the narrative. “The team has secured rights to the classic RD Burman tracks that defined an era. The idea is to create an authentic and emotionally rich homage to the genius of Pancham Da. Music sittings have already begun to bring the best versions of the original songs,” the source adds.
Pinkvilla further learns that the makers of the RD Burman biopic plan to take it to the floors by the end of 2026.
Neeraj Pandey will direct and co-produce the film along with Farhan Akhtar’s Excel Entertainment. It is one of the most ambitious music-based biopics currently in development, and the makers are aiming to start production by year-end.
An official announcement is expected once the scripting and pre-production stages are locked.
Rahul Dev Burman (RD Burman), one of the most successful music directors of the Hindi film music industry, passed away on 4 January 1994 due to heart attack. The song Musafir Hoon Yaaron from Parichay in 1972 was composed while RD Burman was at a hotel after the separation from his first wife Rita Patel.
From the 1960s to the 1990s, Burman composed musical scores for 331 films.
