There was a time when one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, Dilip Kumar, was hesitant about a young, talented girl joining the film industry. He questioned whether the glamorous world of cinema was the right place for women.

Despite knowing her family, he felt that her future could be better served outside films. Education and a more conventional path seemed, to him, a safer choice.

That young woman is Saira Banu. Dilip Kumar first saw her when she was a small child with a tiny role in the iconic film Mughal-e-Azam. He was immediately impressed by her poise and talent.

During this period, it was Dilip Kumar who introduced Saira Banu to the legendary actress Madhubala.

Recalling that moment, Dilip Kumar said that when Saira appeared briefly in the film, she was “just a small girl.” He stated that this introduction marked the beginning of their connection.

When Saira Banu later expressed her wish to join the film industry seriously, Dilip Kumar opposed the idea. He openly said, “What will girls do in the film industry?”

He also mentioned that Saira was well educated and had studied in England. Because of this, he felt she should settle down rather than pursue a career in films.

Saira Banu, though, remained firm about her decision to act. Dilip Kumar acknowledged that she went ahead with her plans.

Over the years, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu grew closer and eventually married in 1966. At the time of their marriage, Saira Banu was 22 years old, while Dilip Kumar was 44, with a 22-year age difference between them.

Dilip Kumar died on July 7, 2021, at the age of 98. His interview continues to draw attention for offering a rare glimpse into his personal views, relationships, and changing perspectives.
