Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in talks to return to Manchester United as the Red Devils’ interim boss but current caretaker coach Darren Fletcher remains an option for the rest of the season
Darren Fletcher reckons he’s ready to become the full-time Manchester United boss should the opportunity arise. The former midfielder has been in caretaker charge of the Red Devils since Ruben Amorim’s sacking earlier this month.
He secured a 2-2 draw with Burnley in his opening game and is set to oversee Sunday’s FA Cup third round clash with Brighton. That game could represent Fletcher’s final match, with United chiefs holding talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding a second spell as interim on Saturday.
Despite that, an extended stay for Fletcher has still not been ruled out. And the Scot has said that he feels capable of doing the job should he be offered it. “I’ve always been quite relaxed about my future,” said Fletcher. “I’ve enjoyed it, I really have. I’ve tried to relish it.
“I think I’m quite well prepared. I’ve always tried to prepare myself to be a manager in the future. It was something I always thought that I would maybe be quite good at or something that I’d enjoy doing.

“It’s not something I’m saying I’m desperate to do. I want to prepare myself to be a manager and that opportunity might come for me one day and I know I’ll be ready to do it.
“But if it doesn’t, I’ll be more than comfortable with that. If it means I remain as the under-18s coach, I’m really happy.”
Regardless of who is in charge of United for the remainder of the campaign, bosses are already putting thought into the man they want to be in charge permanently. A number of World Cup-bound bosses are said to have already been shortlisted ahead of next summer’s tournament.

England boss Thomas Tuchel is among the options, with the German’s contract set to expire at the end of the tournament. Brazil and USA bosses Carlo Ancelotti and Mauricio Pochettino are both in the same boat and are also being considered by United.
Asked about the direction the club is going in, Fletcher added: “It’s not my decision, and ultimately, the club need to do what they think is best, the people in the higher up in the roles in the club.
“They need to know what their plan is going forward for the success of Manchester United and I’m sure they’ll do that.”
