Craig Burley calls out Celtic board on an American-based channel after Wilfried Nancy’s appointment

Wilfried Nancy is finally in the Celtic building.

There isn’t much time to rest because Celtic have a packed December period to deal with, including Premiership, Europa League and League Cup final action.

Then attention will turn to the January transfer window, and the actions of the under-fire Celtic board, who had their troubles under Brendan Rodgers and can’t afford for them to be repeated under Nancy.

After Nancy’s long-awaited appointment was confirmed, the MLS Coach of the Year’s arrival was discussed on American-based channel, ESPN.

Craig Burley on the issues with the Celtic board after Wilfried Nancy’s appointment

Craig Burley understands the pressure of playing for Celtic, and he discussed Nancy’s appointment along with the ‘political’ issues at the club.

When the question was asked ‘how do you think Nancy will do at Celtic’, Burley spoke about the board having money and not wanting to spend it.

Burley stated that the powers that be at Celtic, ‘spend enough to win the Premiership title’, but not take the champions of Scotland to ‘the next level.’

“Hearts were eight points clear, and that was one of the reasons why Brendan Rodgers lost his job,” stated Burley.

“But there were other things behind the scenes. Political. The task of Hearts, keeping it up for the whole season, there’s a better chance of Celtic coming through.”

Former USMNT goalkeeper, Kasey Keller, then asks if Celtic have money to spend:

“Celtic have money,” added Burley. “But part of the ire of the lads, the Celtic support, is that the board won’t spend. They spend enough to win the Scottish title, but they won’t spend to take them to another level.

“But they are still in better shape than everybody else. He should have success there.”

Kasey Keller on Nancy’s ‘jump’ from the MLS to Celtic

The season hasn’t gone to plan for Celtic, and it’s Hearts who have been the surprise leaders at the top of the Premiership table.

Of course, all of that could end on Sunday for Nancy’s first game in charge against Hearts at Parkhead, as former USMNT and Premier League goalkeeper Kasey Keller discussed the Frenchman’s move from the MLS to Celtic.

“It will be a little bit of a jump, obviously, from MLS,” said Keller. “Is Celtic super dominant right now? No.

“So, it’s not like he is coming into a side that it’s easy. You can make mistakes.

“There will be an expectation very quickly of him to be able to figure out how they can win the title. I mean, Hearts are starting to slip a little bit.”
