Country music icon & Grand Ole Opry host Bill Cody dies at 73


LEGENDARY country music broadcaster and longtime Grand Ole Opry host Bill Cody has died aged 73.

His death comes just days after his heartbroken family shared that they were “praying for a miracle” as the veteran broadcaster battled serious health issues.

The beloved radio star, who spent more than three decades as one of the most familiar voices on Nashville’s WSM Radio, died this week, the station confirmed.

Cody was best known for hosting the hugely popular morning show Coffee, Country & Cody, where he welcomed country music’s biggest names and millions of listeners each day.

Announcing his death, WSM Radio said: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend and beloved WSM voice, Bill Cody.”

The broadcaster joined WSM-AM in 1994 and quickly became a fixture in country music radio.

His first in-studio guest was country legend Charlie Daniels.

The station said Cody “built more than a morning show; he created a gathering place rooted in his deep love for country music and the people behind it.”

His voice also became closely linked with the Grand Ole Opry, where he regularly served as a host, including for Opry Country Classics.

Beyond radio, Cody appeared on television and syndicated programs, helping bring country music to audiences far beyond Nashville.

Inspired by time spent at a small Kentucky radio station with his father, Cody turned a childhood dream into a Hall of Fame broadcasting career.

His achievements included induction into the Country Radio Hall of Fame and receiving a star on Nashville’s Music City Walk of Fame.

WSM said he was also due to be inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame, an honor that will now be awarded posthumously.

Paying tribute, the station said: “More than his accolades, Bill will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and genuine gift for connection.

“He was a trusted voice, a generous friend, and a constant companion to generations of listeners.”

WSM added that it will celebrate Cody’s life and career with a special marathon of memorable moments from Coffee, Country & Cody.

The station said the tribute broadcast would honor “a legacy that will forever be part of our station and our community.”

He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of country music radio’s most respected and recognizable figures.
