While a lot of information about the upcoming Canon EOS R6 V has been published, there hasn’t been a lot said about the RF 20-50 f/4L IS USM PZ that will be coming alongside the R6 V on May 13, 2026.
We will do the best we can to give you some idea about what to expect. We also have some questions that may bring some clarity from the grapevine.
RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ
This is what we know about the new lens, and it’s not much, but it’s the weekend and it may be dreary weather where you are, and you need something to read.
We have not seen the lens; we’re just going from what we have been told.
The lens is about the same size as the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. That’s not too surprising, there’s a big difference between 20mm and 24mm lens design if Canon isn’t doing any of their computational tricks, which I hope won’t be the case.
The focus is done internally, just like the RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ. That would be another reason for the size if anyone thinks the comparison means the lens is too big.
There are added buttons on the lens compared to the RF 24-105 f/4L IS USM. One button is an fn (function), and unfortunately what the other button is was out of sight. The unknown button looks exactly like the one you find on the VCM lenses above the IRIS switch. That gives us some hope that there will be an auto IRIS feature built into the lens, but there won’t be an aperture ring.
There will be 3 rings on the lens, and you can obviously bind two of them to aperture.
What we don’t know, but want too ASAP
The first one a lot of people care about is how much will it cost? We don’t know, but that’s a pressing question we hope gets answered this week.
The zoom ring? Will it be a back-and-forth power zoom ring that is basically a zoom and wide rocker that you already find on the R50 V, R6 V and C50. What we hope to see, and some have mentioned on the forum, is that the zoom operates like some power zoom camcorders, they have the same movement feel as a “normal” zoom ring so you can zoom in and out as fast as you want without being tied to servo speed.
There isn’t a lot of movement when it’s only a 20-50mm focal range, but photographers who are interested in this lens likely won’t buy it if it feels and operates like the RF-S PZ lens. It would be cool if the lens could be switched to work either way.
We hope this brings out some more information, I am legitimately interested in this lens to pair with the R8. It will have to feel like a photography lens for me though.
