Canada 1-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina Stats: Super-Sub Larin Secures Late Point for Co-Hosts

Cyle Larin made an instant impact after coming on as a substitute to secure Canada’s first ever point at the FIFA World Cup in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Cyle Larin made an instant impact off the bench as he earned Canada their first point at a World Cup in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Jovo Lukic had given Bosnia-Herzegovina a surprise lead in the first half, but the co-hosts rallied in the second half at Toronto Stadium as the points were shared in the Group B opener.

Canada dominated the opening stages, but Bosnia-Herzegovina had the better of the early chances, with Amar Memic blazing a first-time effort over the bar.

Jonathan David has been involved in over a third of Canada’s goals across their last two major tournaments, but he could not find his scoring touch, firing his clearest opening straight at Nikola Vasilj.

Bosnia-Herzegovina soon quieted the home crowd, with Sead Kolasinac rising highest to flick on a corner at the near post, and Lukic was waiting behind him to glance in from close range 21 minutes in.

Jovo Lukic netted his first goal for Bosnia-Herzegovina in just his fourth appearance in all competitions.

Tani Oluwaseyi proved a bright spark for Canada, though fired high over the bar under little pressure before the break.

Richie Laryea was close to wheeling away in celebration in the 53rd minute as his low drive fizzed through Vasilj’s legs, but Kolasinac was on the line to turn it against the underside of the bar before it bounced to safety.

Moments later, Ermedin Demirovic was played clean through on goal as he ghosted between two defenders, but Maxime Crepeau was quickly off his line to smother the chance, prompting him to send it wide.

Oluwaseyi then saw a header cleared off the line by Demirovic, but it was the forward’s replacement, Larin, who equalised just 121 seconds after coming off the bench as he brilliantly turned his defender to rifle his shot past a helpless Vasilj. It was Larin’s first touch of the game.

Larin almost snatched a last-gasp winner as the ball pinballed through the Bosnia-Herzegovina box, but Tarik Muharemovic threw himself in front of the shot to preserve the point.

Canada End Wait for First Point but Cannot Make Chances Count

Canada have never won a World Cup game in seven attempts, going behind on every occasion too, but this point is still a massive improvement on previous results, as they had lost each of their previous six.

Jesse Marsch, who is the first American manager to lead another nation at the men’s World Cup, is tasked with ensuring Canada get past the first round for the first time, and his side showed promising signs.

Their main problem, as has been the case in the past, was their failure to convert their chances. They had 13 shots overall – the most Bosnia-Herzegovina have ever faced in a single game at the tournament – worth 1.25 expected goals (xG), but only got four on target. Two of those were Opta-defined ‘big’ chances.

The co-hosts were also without star man Alphonso Davies through injury, and Larin became just the second Canadian player, after their captain, to score at the World Cup.

Bosnia-Herzegovina, who left Edin Dzeko on the bench, showed their strengths, though, putting Canada under pressure with eight shots (worth 0.98 xG) and had something to celebrate as Lukic scored his first international goal.
