Box Office: Curry Barker’s ‘Obsession’ Posts $17.2M Opening

Focus Features/Blumhouse’s $15M+ TIFF acquisition, Obsession, continued to best its forecast, now with a $17.2M opening as of this morning in third place.

Heading into the weekend, YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker‘s first big screen theatrical was eyed at $8M-$9M in a frame where Lionsgate’s Michael popped back up to No. 1 for a second time with an estimated $26M third weekend, -31%, followed by 20th Century Studios’ Devil Wears Prada 2 with around $17.8M, -57%, in second.

The other big pom pom wave for Obsession as we previously told you: this is a fantastic opening for a movie acquired out of a film festival. When was the last time we saw a box office opening for a movie that was acquired for $15M+?

Obsession‘s Sunday arrived in at $4.8M versus the $3.7M which was reported. As we previously told you, the romance horror movie earned an A- CinemaScore — extremely rare for a horror movie which typically averages between a B and a C on that pollster’s scale. Read, Get Out earned an A-.

PLFs repped close to 40% of weekend ticket sales with a 39% turnout from those under 25. Also, the 25-34 set repped 39% of the crowd. Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak showed a very good 70% definite recommend. So, there’s the catalysts for an even better weekend than imagined from Barker.

Next up for Barker, he’s reteamed with Blumhouse and Focus Features for Anything But Ghosts which he’ll also star in with Aaron Paul and Bryce Dallas Howard. He’s also set to direct A24’s reboot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
