BMW F 450 GS launch LIVE updates: Price, variants, range, and features

At 178 kg ready to ride, the F 450 GS is impressively lean for a 420cc adventure twin. Its closest obvious rival, the KTM 390 Adventure, weighs in at around 179 kg in comparable trim, so the two are genuinely neck to neck on mass. The BMW’s seat height of 845 mm is on the taller side, but BMW does offer a low seat option in its accessories catalogue for shorter riders (internationally). Its 14-litre tank (with around 2.5 litres of reserve) should return a theoretical range of well over 300 km at the claimed 26 km/l.

The F 450 GS ADV is available in four variants internationally: Basic, Exclusive, Sport, and GS Trophy. At a glance, the naming is fairly self-explanatory. The Exclusive adds comfort and touring-oriented features, the Sport dials up the performance-focused kit, and the GS Trophy is for those who actually intend to get the tyres muddy on a regular basis. The Basic sits at the entry point, offering the core mechanical package for those who want the BMW adventure experience without the premium trimmings.

All of the mentioned specifications and features of the ADV are based on the European spec motorbike. BMW Motorrad could package the Indian version of the motorcycle differently. However, we expect it to remain largely the same.

One of the popular features of the F 450 GS is the ERC, or Easy Ride Clutch. BMW has been marketing this as a significant addition for newer riders. It essentially simplifies clutch operation, reducing the effort and coordination required to pull away smoothly. While experienced riders may not lean on it heavily, it could make the difference for someone transitioning from a smaller motorcycle or returning to riding after a break.

The BMW F 450 GS offers Rain, Road and Enduro riding modes. This means the motorcycle can change its behaviour to suit weather, surface grip and riding conditions according to the rider. That makes the bike more versatile than a straightforward commuter or highway tourer.

Stopping duties are handled by a 310 mm front floating disc gripped by a Brembo four-piston fixed caliper. The rear uses a 240 mm rigid disc with a single-piston floating caliper. Both the brakes are managed by BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, which is more sophisticated than standard ABS as it can detect lean angles and adjust braking force accordingly. This helps during panic braking situations, making riding significantly safer both on the road and off-road conditions.

The F 450 GS runs on aluminium cast wheels, 19-inch at the front and 17-inch at the rear, wrapped with 100/90-19 and 130/80-17 dual-purpose tyres respectively. The 19-inch front wheel is a GS hallmark and is particularly important for off-road capability: it rolls over obstacles more easily and carries momentum on uneven terrain better than smaller options. The GS Trophy variant goes a step further with tubeless wire-spoke wheels and knobby-pattern tyres.

Up front, the F 450 GS uses a 43 mm upside-down telescopic fork, while the rear uses an aluminium twin-sided swingarm paired with a monoshock offering adjustable compression and rebound damping. Both ends travel 180 mm, which is competitive for an adventure motorcycle in this class and gives the F 450 GS dependable off-road credentials.

BMW appears to be targeting riders who want a premium badge, usable performance and a bike that is friendly enough for daily riding. It should appeal to people upgrading from smaller motorcycles as well as those looking for an easier-to-live-with adventure tourer.

The BMW F 450 GS is built around a steel tube frame in which the engine itself acts as a structural, load-bearing member, a setup that keeps the overall chassis lean and light. The subframe is also made of steel tubes. This architecture is one of the reasons BMW can keep the overall weight as low while maintaining rigidity. The wheelbase measures 1,465 mm, with a steering head angle of 26.1 degrees and 115 mm of castor. This geometry should translate into reasonable stability at speed and manageable handling in tighter trail situations.

The F 450 GS is paired with a six-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch as standard, both of which are fairly expected at this price point. What isn’t expected is a bi-directional quickshifter coming as a standard fitment. This translates into clutchless upshifts and downshifts, which makes both spirited riding and navigating traffic considerably easier. The slipper clutch, meanwhile, prevents rear wheel hop during aggressive downshifts, which is particularly relevant if you’re riding off-road or on uneven surfaces.

The new twin produces 48 hp at 8,750 rpm and 43 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm, which look like solid figures for the class, and put it comfortably ahead of 390-class rivals on paper. The compression ratio sits at 13.0:1, and the engine uses electronic fuel injection with throttle-by-wire for precise, programmable throttle response. That throttle-by-wire setup also ensures the proper functionality of multiple riding modes and the traction control system.

At the heart of the F 450 GS is an all-new engine, not a carried-over unit, but something BMW Motorrad developed from scratch for this motorcycle. It’s a 420cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin with four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts. What makes this engine particularly interesting is its crankpin offset of 135 degrees, an unusual choice that BMW says improves vibration management and yields a characterful exhaust note.

The BMW F 450 GS is effectively replacing the G 310 GS, which BMW Motorrad India has discontinued. The G 310 GS had its fans, but its critics made their presence known as well. The pricing was seen as ambitious for a 310cc single, and the competition from KTM and others made its value case a tough sell. BMW appears to have taken those lessons to heart with the 450, building something with more displacement, more hardware, and a stronger feature set to justify its position.

Before we get into the motorcycle itself, it’s worth noting that the F 450 GS is going to be manufactured in India under BMW Motorrad’s partnership with TVS Motor Company. The collaboration has been running for years and has previously given the G 310 R and G 310 RR to Indian riders. The difference this time? The F 450 GS is a more ambitious machine, stepping into mid-displacement territory rather than the 310cc space that the earlier models occupied.
