Barcelona face Atletico Madrid competition for Premier League playmaker – report
According to MARCA, Atletico Madrid have now entered the race to sign exit-bound Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva, who is also a target for FC Barcelona.
The Portuguese midfielder’s contract at Manchester City expires this summer, and he will leave the club as a free agent after nine seasons, where he became one of the most important players of the Pep Guardiola era.
Barcelona keeping tabs on Silva
As has already been reported, Barcelona continue monitoring Silva’s situation closely as they see him as a market opportunity.
The 31-year-old versatile playmaker, for his part, has his heart set on a move to Catalonia and has been offering himself to the club through superagent Jorge Mendes.
However, as things stand, the Blaugrana have other, more important priorities – like a new striker and a centre-back.
As such, any potential move for Silva remains heavily dependent on salary restrictions and the club’s sporting priorities.
Atletico Madrid enter the race
Now, though, Atletico Madrid have entered the race to sign Silva with real determination.
The Spanish capital club, led by director Mateu Alemany, believe that he fits perfectly into the new project Diego Simeone is building.
Los Rojiblancos particularly value his experience, competitiveness and ability to operate in several attacking and midfield positions.
Following Antoine Griezmann’s confirmed departure, Atletico see Silva as someone who could provide the leadership the team will need.
Apart from Atletico, clubs like Juventus, AC Milan, and Chelsea are also looking at the Portuguese international. So, if Barcelona do decide to go after Silva, they will have a tough fight on their hands.
