Autodesk Announces AI Rigging and Neural Layer in Flow Studio

Autodesk has just announced they’ve added AI Rigging and Neural Layer to Flow Studio, which unlock faster, more flexible paths for creators to turn 3D assets into expressive characters.

The complex, technical, and time-consuming process of creating characters requires expertise across rigging, animation, lighting, and rendering. Many new AI tools, while fast, produce generic, templated results. Flow Studio’s new AI Rigging and Neural Layer capabilities give creators “both the ease and speed of AI and the creative control of professional workflows.”

New AI capabilities in Flow Studio include:

  • AI Rigging automatically prepares characters for animation
  • Neural Layer delivers cinematic-quality rendering without traditional pipelines

Together, these new capabilities create a more seamless path from concept to performance.

AI Rigging: from model to motion

As Autodesk explains, rigging has traditionally been one of the most technical and time-intensive steps in character creation. AI Rigging removes that barrier entirely. Now, with minimal setup, Flow Studio helps creators:

  • Turn 3D models into animation-ready characters in minutes
  • Drive animations directly from video inputs
  • Skip complex rigging workflows and focus on storytelling
  • Export rigged assets to Maya, Blender, and Unreal for advanced workflows

Neural Layer: cinematic quality, without the pipeline

The company goes on to describe how Neural Layer reimagines rendering—bringing high-end visual quality into a faster, more accessible workflow. Creators can achieve:

  • Realistic skin, hair, fur, and materials
  • Dynamic, film-style lighting
  • Nuanced facial performance and micro-expressions
  • More grounded motion with improved AI mocap
  • Natural physics, cloth simulation, and compositing

According to Autodesk, Flow Studio is designed for experienced 3D artists or creatives just starting out, allowing them to do the following:

  • Stay flexible by exporting to preferred DCC tools for full control
  • Move faster by completing high-quality shots directly inside Flow Studio
  • Scale creativity without scaling technical complexity

This balance of speed, control, and accessibility opens the door to a wider range of creators—from indie filmmakers to professional VFX teams.

With these updates, Autodesk Flow Studio continue to expand its capabilities beyond asset generation into a complete character performance platform. Creators can now move seamlessly from idea to model to animation to cinematic output within a unified workflow.
