Arthur Fils just set up a Madrid Open test tennis fans won’t ignore

Look out, tennis world, because here comes Arthur Fils. The 21-year-old Frenchman has been toying with becoming an elite ATP player for several years now, but all players need to find their footing against the more experienced opponents. Fils seemed more of a showman than an efficient player at times.

The last several tournaments this year have changed that. He won the Barcelona Open, helped possibly by Carlos Alcaraz getting hurt and having to withdraw from the event, and he was already making inroads at the Madrid Masters ahead of facing another upstart, Jiri Lehecka.

Lehecka has also had quite the last couple of months of 2026, but he proved he wasn’t ready to take on the revamped game of Fils in the quarterfinals. Fils hit his forehand and his backhand with immense bombast, and overpowered the Czech, who was getting used to overpowering other players before he took on Fils.

In the first set, and otherwise evenly played start to the match went the way of the Frenchman, who is quickly moving up the ATP rankings, 6-3. The Czech had more aces than Fils, but only won 52 percent of his serves while landing 75 percent of them. Those statistics alone had to feel defeating for Lehecka.

Fils astonishingly won 10 of the 21 first serves he faced, a telling number for a player who is trying to prove he can be a consistent top-5 ATP player. It is one thing to keep holding serve, but quite another to take games off worthy foes who are landing their serve.

Of course, the Frenchman was helped by the Czech having six winners but 18 unforced errors, a ratio no player wants. Fils was a cool seven and eight, respectively.

In the second set, Arthur Fils slightly dipped in form but still didn’t face a break point, and got the only break he would need to have total control of the match. Jiri Lehecka didn’t play poorly; he was just no real match for the rising Frenchman.

In the live ATP rankings, Arthur Fils has moved up to No. 17 after beating Lehecka 6-3, 604. Should Fils win the Madrid Masters, he would rise as high as No 13. His next match might be a different story, though. He will face No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals.
