Apple names Johny Srouji hardware chief as John Ternus prepares to take over as CEO

Apple has announced a senior leadership reshuffle that will see Johny Srouji take charge of its hardware division, while John Ternus prepares to step into the role of chief executive officer later this year.

Srouji has been appointed chief hardware officer with immediate effect. In this role, he will oversee both hardware engineering and the hardware technologies organisation, responsibilities that were earlier managed by Ternus.

Srouji to lead hardware and silicon efforts

Srouji previously served as senior vice president of hardware technologies and has played a key role in Apple’s chip development. He led the creation of the company’s first in-house system-on-chip, the A4, and later contributed to the expansion of Apple silicon across devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

His responsibilities have also included oversight of core hardware components, including batteries, cameras, storage controllers, sensors, displays, and cellular modems. Apple said his work helped build a large engineering team focused on integrating hardware and silicon across its product lineup.

Chief executive officer Tim Cook said Srouji had a major influence on Apple’s silicon strategy and product development, highlighting his contribution across the company’s engineering efforts. Incoming chief executive officer John Ternus said he expects to continue working closely with Srouji in their new roles.

Ternus set for CEO transition

Ternus, who currently heads hardware engineering, will replace Cook as chief executive officer later this year. He has been with Apple for more than two decades and has worked across key product categories including iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Following the transition, Cook will move into the role of executive chairman, continuing his involvement with the company.
