Apple May Launch “Ultra” Line with Foldable iPhone, OLED MacBook


Apple Inc. appears to be preparing a major shift in its premium product strategy, with reports suggesting the introduction of an “Ultra” lineup that could debut with a foldable iPhone and a high-end MacBook. According to a report by Macworld, the company may brand its first foldable smartphone as the “iPhone Ultra,” marking a departure from the anticipated “iPhone Fold” naming.

The move signals Apple’s intent to elevate its most advanced devices into a distinct category above its existing Pro models. The “Ultra” branding is already associated with top-tier Apple offerings such as the Apple Watch Ultra and the M1 Ultra chip, both of which represent the company’s most powerful and expensive technologies.

Reports, citing insights from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, suggest that the foldable iPhone has become a “priority” for Apple’s next CEO, John Ternus. The device is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this year but will sit above it as a more premium alternative rather than replacing any existing models.

In terms of design, the iPhone Ultra is likely to feature a book-style fold, opening into a display roughly comparable to an iPad mini. When folded, users would interact with a smaller outer screen. Apple is reportedly focusing on minimizing the visible crease and enhancing durability—two critical factors that have defined the success of foldable devices so far.

The device may run on iOS with interface adjustments inspired by iPad-style multitasking, allowing for improved productivity through features like split-screen apps and enhanced navigation. Hardware expectations include a dual-camera system with a 48MP primary and ultra-wide sensor, along with dual front-facing cameras. Interestingly, the report indicates Apple could opt for Touch ID integrated into the side button instead of Face ID.

Additional rumored specifications include a 5.3-inch cover display, a 7.8-inch inner display, and a battery capacity exceeding 5,500mAh. The device may be powered by the A20 Pro chip and incorporate Apple’s in-house C2 modem, housed within a titanium and aluminum chassis.

Beyond smartphones, Apple’s “Ultra” branding could extend to its Mac lineup. The company is reportedly developing a MacBook Ultra featuring an OLED touchscreen—something long speculated but never implemented in Apple’s laptops. According to supply chain insights, Samsung Display is expected to supply these OLED panels, with production beginning later this year.

The panels may come in 14-inch and 16-inch variants, with shipments potentially reaching up to two million units by year-end. This device is likely to sit above the MacBook Pro range in terms of pricing and features, offering a more premium alternative while maintaining the Pro lineup as a relatively accessible option.

If these reports materialize, Apple’s “Ultra” branding could redefine its premium ecosystem, positioning its most advanced innovations under a unified identity.
