Ahmedabad to host 2030 Commonwealth Games, 15 to 17 sports to feature | Sport-others News

Ahmedabad has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday as the delegates of 74 Commonwealth member nations ratified India’s bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.

India edged out Abuja, Nigeria, as the other bidder for the hosting.

The Indian delegation in Glasgow had Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Joint Sports Secretary Kunal as the representatives.

“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a hundred years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together Athletes, communities, and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress,” said IOA president PT Usha.

Commonwealth Sport also confirmed that 15–17 sports will feature at the 2030 Games. The next Games, to be held in Glasgow, will feature 10 sports.

The process to finalise the remainder of the programme will start next month, and the full Centenary Games line-up will be announced next year, as per Indian Olympic Association. The sports under consideration are: Archery, Badminton, 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon and Para Triathlon and Wrestling.  The host can also propose up to two new or traditional sports.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Narendra Modi Stadium are going to be the prime venues for the Games.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, currently under construction, will stage multiple sporting events and serve as the athletes’ village, accommodating up to 3,000 people.

Earlier this year, the Asian Aquatics Championships and Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships were hosted at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura and next up is the Asian Weightlifting Championships.

After the announcement, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that the World Police Games will also be held in Ahmedabad.

“We have been hosting so many events in the past few years. In the build up to CWG, we will also host events like World Police Games,” the minister said.
