Not long ago, hardly anyone had heard of Kodinhi, a small village in Malappuram district. But almost overnight, it has caught widespread attention, turning Kodinhi and its people into a social media sensation.

A summer sale advertisement by e-commerce giant Flipkart has further boosted this fame. The scenes, showing Kodinhi’s twins in light-hearted and humorous situations, quickly went viral, with people laughing, sharing and replaying them across social media.

The punchline

The advertisement opens with a cheerful line: “Welcome to Kodinhi, record holder for the most number of twins. Here, double is in the DNA.” From the very start, it sparks curiosity.

In the ad, the Kodinhi twins become a playful symbol of Flipkart’s “SaSa Lele” summer sale, which is built around buy-one-get-one offers. In the world of the ad, everyone in Kodinhi seems to have a twin, just as every purchase on the platform comes with an extra.

The scenes are simple, yet unforgettable. In one, a nurse gently places a newborn baby in a mother’s arms and says, “congratulations, it is a boy.” Before the moment settles, another nurse walks in holding a second baby just like the first and says with a smile, “boy one, get one.”

In another scene, a man rushes into a police station, worried about his missing brother. When the officer asks for a photo, he takes a close-up selfie and shows it to the officer. The inspector recognises the missing person.

Then comes a love scene, where a young man looks into the eyes of his fiancee and promises ‘you are the only one in this world for me’. Just then, her twin walks past. He is agape as she raises her hand in annoyance.

The real story

The advertisement reinforces the message that nothing in Kodinhi comes alone. But behind the laughter and viral fame lay a real story. Kodinhi had long been known for its unusually high number of twins, nearly 400 pairs in a village of just 2,000 families. No one knew exactly why. There had been guesses, theories and endless curiosity, but no clear answer. Media from across India, and even from other countries, had visited, trying to understand the mystery.

Yet for the people of Kodinhi, it was never strange. It was just life. Two children running to school side by side. Two friends answering to the same name. Two smiles where the world expected one.

The advertisement may have made Kodinhi famous, but it did not create its magic. It only showed the world what had always been there: a village where life comes in pairs, where joy quietly doubles itself and where being “one of a kind” sometimes means being two.
