Aamir Khan Married Reena Dutta At 21 And Kiran Rao At 40: Why He Divorced Both
Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta on April 18, 1986. The couple tied the knot when Aamir was 21 and Reena was 19, and later welcomed two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan.
Before becoming one of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Aamir found support in Reena. She remained a constant presence during his rise in the film industry and was also briefly associated with Lagaan as a producer.
In 2002, the couple ended their marriage. Despite the separation, both continued to co-parent their children and maintained a cordial relationship over the years.
Speaking years after the divorce, Aamir said marrying Reena within a few months of knowing each other was a mistake. He explained that they were very young when they decided to get married.
Aamir later acknowledged that his intense focus on work created distance in the marriage. He described workaholism as one of the factors that contributed to the relationship breaking down.
After his divorce from Reena, Aamir married filmmaker Kiran Rao on December 28, 2005. The two had first met during the making of Lagaan, where Kiran worked as an assistant director.
Aamir and Kiran became parents to Azad Rao Khan through surrogacy in 2011. The couple were often seen as one of Bollywood’s most stable partnerships.
In July 2021, the couple released a joint statement saying they were beginning a new chapter in life, “no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.”
Kiran Rao later said she wanted her own space and wished to live independently. She also stressed that there was no bitterness between them and that they remained close even after the divorce.
In 2025, Aamir publicly introduced Gauri Spratt as his partner. He has since spoken warmly about the relationship and said both Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao continue to remain family despite the end of their marriages.
Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt are all set to get married in July.
