The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia on Sunday (December 28) has dismissed the news of the board’s planning to sack Gautam Gambhir as head coach of India’s Test team. According to the BCCI official, Gambhir, who was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team for all three formats of the game in July 2024, will remain in charge of the side. There were a lot of question marks over Gambhir’s future as head coach of the Indian Test team after India suffered back-to-back defeats in two home Tests against South Africa last month.

But Saikia has issued a clarification by stating that there is no threat to Gambhir’s position.

It was reported by news agency PTI on Saturday that the board has approached VVS Laxman to take charge of the Test team, but in an interview with Sports Tak on Sunday, Saikia denied all the rumours.

“It’s all rumours. We haven’t discussed or approached anyone. He will continue as per the contract,” Saikia told Sports Tak.

On rumours of Laxman being the next coach of Indian Cricket Team, Saikia told ANI: “The reports currently circulating are entirely inaccurate and purely speculative. Despite being carried by some reputed media outlets, there is no truth to these claims. The BCCI categorically denies them and has taken no such steps. These reports are based on conjecture and imagination, are factually incorrect, and completely baseless.”

Since Gambhir took charge of the Indian team in July 2024, India has managed to win only seven out of 19 Tests played so far. Under his guidance India won two Tests against Bangladesh (home), one in Australia, two in England and two against the West Indies in front of home fans. On the other hand, India lost three home Tests against New Zealand, three away Test series against Australia, two away red-ball matches against England and a couple more home Tests against South Africa.

The former left-handed batter from Delhi is the only Indian head coach to lose five home Tests and also the only Indian head coach to get whitewashed twice in home series.

India will play three more Test series in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, but their chances of finishing in the top two are very difficult. India will finish in the top two if they manage to win at least seven out of the nine remaining matches.

India will play two Test series (vs Sri Lanka and New Zealand) away from home in 2026 and then in the first quarter of 2027 will host Australia for a five-match series.
