India’s two-wheeler retail market registered healthy year-on-year growth in May 2026, although sales moderated on a month-on-month basis. Total retail sales stood at 18,44,947 units in May 2026, up 7.54% compared to 17,15,581 units sold in May 2025. This translated to an increase of 1.29 lakh units YoY. However, compared to April 2026, retail sales declined by 3.72%, with volumes falling by over 71,000 units. The slowdown was visible across most major manufacturers, although a few brands managed to buck the trend.

Hero MotoCorp continued to lead the two-wheeler retail market with sales of 5,17,951 units in May 2026. However, growth remained modest at 2.09% YoY, adding just over 10,600 units compared to the same month last year. Hero accounted for 28.07% of total two-wheeler retail sales during the month.

Honda secured second position with 4,52,420 units, posting a stronger 9.39% YoY growth. The company added nearly 39,000 units over May 2025 and held a market share of 24.52%. TVS Motor retained third place with retail sales of 3,56,352 units. The company registered an 11.53% growth, adding 36,834 units year-on-year. TVS now commands a market share of 19.32%. Together, Hero, Honda and TVS accounted for nearly 72% of all two-wheeler retail sales in India during May 2026.
Bajaj Auto recorded retail sales of 1,97,738 units, registering a modest 1.96% growth over May 2025. The company retained a market share of 10.72%. Suzuki continued its steady momentum with sales of 97,885 units, up 5.12% YoY. Royal Enfield sold 84,480 motorcycles, posting a 3.44% increase compared to last year.

Among mainstream brands, Yamaha delivered one of the stronger performances. Sales rose 16.49% to 60,625 units, adding over 8,500 units year-on-year. Classic Legends, which sells Jawa, Yezdi and BSA motorcycles, more than doubled its sales with 4,447 units, registering 103.06% growth.
EV Brands Show Strongest Growth
The biggest gains came from electric two-wheeler manufacturers. Ather Energy doubled its retail sales to 28,240 units, recording a remarkable 100.27% growth. The company added over 14,000 units compared to May 2025 and emerged as India’s fastest-growing major EV brand.
Ola Electric, however, witnessed a decline. Retail sales fell 20.17% to 15,141 units, down by 3,826 units compared to the same period last year. Among smaller EV players, River EV recorded 245.08% growth with 3,720 units sold, while BGauss grew 204.71% to 3,297 units. Greaves Electric Mobility (Ampere) also posted a strong 77.92% increase, reaching 7,695 units.

Petrol-powered two-wheelers continued to dominate with a 90.68% market share in May 2026. However, this was down from 93.67% in May 2025, indicating a gradual shift towards alternative powertrains. EVs increased their share to 9.25%, up from 6.11% a year ago and 7.92% in April 2026, reflecting growing acceptance of electric scooters and motorcycles. Meanwhile, CNG/LPG two-wheelers remained a niche segment with just 0.07% market share despite recent product launches. The data shows that EVs are steadily eating into petrol’s dominance and are now close to capturing a double-digit share of India’s two-wheeler retail market.
