20 RPGs and Strategy Games to Grab in the 2025 Steam Winter Sale
Some of the best Turn-Based RPGs and Strategy Games from my personal wishlist, with a ridiculous low price.
The Winter Sale is one of Steam’s biggest events of the year, with tons of discounted games and some of the biggest deals even on major titles. Best of all, it runs for several weeks, giving you plenty of opportunity to fill up your library over the holidays and into the new year.
Today I decided to do what I usually do: open up my personal wishlist and see what’s actually worth considering, especially since the prices on some of these twenty titles have never been this low.
I’ve found some of the best turn-based games that Steam has discounted this winter. If you’ve been waiting for these titles to drop in price, now is the time. Check them out below.
The Banner Saga 3
- Developer: Stoic
- Release Date: 26 July, 2018
- Platforms: Windows, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
The Banner Saga is famous among indie games for its hand-drawn aesthetic and epic narrative spanning three titles. With its enormous cast of Viking heroes and crumbling world, the trilogy is a story you won’t soon forget as you guide the fate of your band.
All three Banner Saga titles are 85% off until 5 January. Normally $24.99 each, you can get them for $3.74 during the Steam Winter Sale. This is one series that’s worth getting all at once, so if you buy the Trilogy or Stoic Edition Bundles, you can save even more off of this already fantastic price.
Total War: Warhammer II
- Developer: The Creative Assembly
- Release Date: 28 September, 2017
- Platforms: Windows, Mac, Linux
- Steam Page
Combining the massive battles of Total War with the deep lore of Warhammer seemed like a smart play when the two franchises first crossed over nearly ten years ago, and three games later they’ve proven to be some of the most popular strategy games on Steam.
Each of the three titles offers a different look at the massive Old World and the conflicts that define it, from the Empire to the jungles of Lustria to Cathay and beyond.
As with The Banner Saga, the entire Total War: Warhammer trilogy is discounted for the duration of the Steam Winter Sale. At 75% off, you can get all three games for $14.99 each, down from their regular price of $59.99. There’s a hefty amount of DLC for each game, but if you’re just looking to get started the Trilogy Bundle offers hundreds of hours of play between the three just on its own.
Expeditions: Rome
- Developer: Logic Artists
- Release Date: 20 January, 2022
- Platforms: Windows
- Steam Page
Expeditions: Rome takes the classic CRPG formula and applies it to a historical setting, with amazing results.
As the leader of a Roman Legion, you’ll lead campaigns across the empire while navigating the dangerous politics of the time. Your choices on the battlefield and off will impact the fate of Rome.
If you’re looking for a solid story with thrilling tactical battles to sink your teeth into, Expeditions: Rome is 75% off on Steam until 5 January. It’s worth its full price of $44.99, so $11.24 is a real bargain. You can also get it as part of a bundle with the earlier Expeditions games, Conquistador and Viking, for just $26.95, during the sale period.
Mato Anomalies
- Developer: Arrowiz
- Release Date: 10 March, 2023
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Mato Anomalies is a unique JRPG that follows two protagonists, each of whom has unique skills that you’ll need to unravel the mysteries behind the game’s futuristic city.
As Doe, you’ll investigate strange occurrences and question the people of Mato; as Gram, you’ll enter demonic rifts and do battle with the entities within.
Mato Anomalies is a cool twist on RPGs, especially for fans of games like Persona. For the Steam Winter Sale, it’s 75% off its list price of $14.99 until 5 January. That means you can get this future-noir adventure for just $3.74!
Wolfstride
- Developer: Ota Imon Studios
- Release Date: 7 December, 2021
- Platforms: Windows, Mac, Switch, Android
- Steam Page
Speaking of outside-the-box RPGs, Wolfstride has it all for players who want something a bit different. This black-and-white comedy game explores the lives of three washed-up former criminals seeking to make their fortune in the world’s biggest mech combat tournament.
Wolfstride is available for just $3.74 on Steam until 5 January, letting you save 75% off its usual price of $14.99. You can also get it bundled with Ota Imon’s roguelike deckbuilder, Zet Zillions, and save on both games.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
- Developer: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
- Release Date: 25 January, 2024
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox
- Steam Page
It’s rare that a new protagonist in a long-running series immediately captures the hearts of fans, but Like A Dragon’s Ichiban Kasuga did exactly that when he debuted in 2020. Infinite Wealth offers even more of Ichiban’s infectious charm as he teams up with the franchise’s original hero Kazuma Kiryu to wreak havoc across Hawaii.
As seems to be the norm with Ichiban’s games, Infinite Wealth trades in Yakuza‘s usual beat-em-up gameplay for over-the-top, frenetic turn-based combat.
It has to be played to be believed, and this $69.99 title is 70% off until 5 January, letting you purchase it for just $20.99. The discount also applies to the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions, or you, can bundle the game with Ichiban’s previous adventure.
Persona 5 Tactica
- Developer: Atlus
- Release Date: 16 November, 2023
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Persona 5 is one of the best, most beloved RPGs of the modern era, so naturally, a new adventure for the Phantom Thieves is more than welcome. Persona 5 Tactica gives the cast a chibi makeover for their grid-based battles, while keeping the stylish action that made the original a hit.
Persona 5 Tactica is a full-blown Atlus RPG, so normally it’s priced at $59.99. During the Steam Winter Sale, though, it’s available at 70% off, bringing it down to an extremely reasonable $17.99. Alternately, you can get the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes all the DLC, for just $2 more during the sale period.
Langrisser I & II
- Developer: Chara-Ani Corporation
- Release Date: 10 March, 2020
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Switch
- Steam Page
If you’re a fan of classic strategy RPGs like Fire Emblem or Shining Force, you might remember the original Langrisser as Warsong, which it was called for its release in English on the Sega Genesis.
It became a long-running series in Japan, which has only made its way west over the last decade or so.
You can experience the first two Langrisser titles, fully remade in a single game, with Langrisser I & II. This duology normally sells for $49.99, but for the Steam Winter Sale it’s discounted to $14.99 until 5 January, a 70% savings. There’s also a free demo available if you want to give it a try before committing to a purchase.
Crown Wars: The Black Prince
- Developer: Artefacts Studio
- Release Date: 23 May, 2024
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Crown Wars has a historical setting, but like the classic Assassin’s Creed games, it uses the Hundred Years’ War as a backdrop for its own tale rather than trying to recreate events in meticulous detail.
As the lord of a small castle, you’ll recruit companions (including some historical figures) to wage a secret war against a cult known only as The Order, managing your holdings and fighting bloody tactical battles.
Crown Wars is usually listed at $39.99, but until 5 January it’s available for just $11.99, a discount of 70%. The Sacred Edition, which includes all the DLC, is just $3 more, or you can get the game as part of a few different bundles.
Miasma Chronicles
- Developer: The Bearded Ladies
- Release Date: 23 May, 2023
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox
- Steam Page
Tactical RPGs with the story depth and graphical quality of a more mainline RPG are always a real treat, and The Bearded Ladies are two-for-two with Mutant Year Zero and Miasma Chronicles.
The latter of the two sends you on an adventure across a post-apocalyptic world to uncover the secrets of the Miasma, with real-time exploration to give you the feeling of really discovering what’s out there.
Miasma Chronicles is 70% off on Steam until 5 January, bringing it down from its usual price of $34.99 to just $10.49. It’s also available as part of several bundles, including with its predecessor, Mutant Year Zero, which is also on sale.
Darkest Dungeon II
- Developer: Red Hook Studios
- Release Date: 8 May, 2023
- Platforms: Windows, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Darkest Dungeon II is a faster, sleeker experience than its predecessor, more of a roguelike than an extended campaign of repeated dungeon dives. It still nails the gothic, cosmic horror of the setting perfectly, though, and the two games together make for some of the most satisfying turn-based combat around if you’re up for the challenge.
Both Darkest Dungeon titles are 69% off on Steam until 5 January, bringing them from $39.99 each down to $12.39. This is a perfect time to complete your collection if you have one but not the other, or to spring for a bundle and pick up both at once.
Beyond GalaxyLand
- Developer: Sam Enright
- Release Date: 24 September, 2024
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Beyond Galaxyland deserves attention for its beautiful pixel art alone, but it’s also a thrilling 2.5D RPG adventure across strange and wonderful planets. If you mixed Final Fantasy with The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, you might get something like this.
Beyond Galaxyland is pretty affordable even when it’s not on sale, going for just $14.99. That makes it especially tempting during the Steam Winter Sale, where a 66% discount has it on offer for just $5.09 until 5 January. It’s also available as part of a few bundles. Here you can find my review of the game.
ONE PIECE ODYSSEY
- Developer: ILCA, Inc.
- Release Date: 12 January, 2023
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch
- Steam Page
Video game adaptations of existing properties can be hit or miss, but One Piece Odyssey nails the world-famous anime epic’s bizarre flair. It’s a completely new adventure featuring the Straw Hats, with JRPG gameplay to showcase their powers.
Even if you aren’t a fan of the series, One Piece Odyssey is still a quality game, and now is a great time to get it on Steam. It’s 63% off during the Winter Sale, bringing it from $39.99 down to $14.79. The Deluxe Edition, which includes cosmetics and perks, is a bit more at $23.99, but that’s still 60% less than its usual price tag of $59.99.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars
- Developer: Square Enix
- Release Date: 28 October, 2021
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS
- Steam Page
What happens when Yoko Taro, the creative mind behind Nier Automata, makes a card-based RPG trilogy for Square Enix? The Voice of Cards games are the answer, three enchanting fantasy stories told through cards like a Dungeon Master in a deck.
All three games – The Isle Dragon Roars, The Forsaken Maiden, and The Beasts of Burden – have beautiful card art and a thrilling tale to tell.
The Voice of Cards games are all 60% off on Steam during the Steam Winter Sale, letting you get them for $11.99 each until 5 January as opposed to the usual $29.99 each. They’re also available bundled with all of their DLC, as part of a trilogy package, or in a giant set that includes everything for all three games. The latter is just $32.40 for everything in the series while the sale lasts!
For The King II

- Release Date: 2 November 2023
- Platforms: Windows, PlayStation, Xbox
- Steam Page
The holidays are a great time for co-op, and For The King II is a fantastic pick-up-and-play roguelite that lets you and your friends battle tyranny one turn at a time.
Building on the success of the original, it’s accessible enough that new players can jump right in, and just challenging enough to be rewarding but not frustrating.
For The King II is 60% off on Steam until 5 January, taking it from $24.99 to $9.99. You can also get the Deluxe Edition, which includes both of the DLC to date, Fallen Oaths and Tinkerers of Fate, for $19.35, a 44% savings over the whole package. The original For The King is even more deeply discounted for gamers on a budget, at 80% off, and is also available packaged with the sequel.
