Manchester United academy defender Albert Mills has been called into first-team training by Michael Carrick this week. Here is everything you need to know about him.

Academy players in first-team training have not been rare at Manchester United this season, with Michael Carrick in particular drafting a couple of talents in every week.

JJ Gabriel has stolen the headlines for his involvement, and for good reason, given that he is just 15 years old and is already a regular in the senior group.

Also in the group was Albert Mills, whose rise continues to fly under the radar.

Several look like top talents…

Mills has been stellar for the academy this season under Darren Fletcher, and as a result, he has gotten his rewards with a promotion to first-team training.

Mills could be seen pictured in the session alongside senior pros such as Noussair Mazraoui, taking part in drills and doing his utmost to impress the first team coaching staff.

It will have been an invaluable experience for Mills, with Harry Maguire citing how vital Jonathan Woodgate has been in sharing knowledge with the younger defenders.

Who is Albert Mills?

Mills is an 18-year-old Norwich-born centre-back who has been a regular in the U18 and U21 sides over the past couple of seasons.

Mills signed his scholarship in 2024 and has since been steadily improving to this season, which has been his best yet, being a permanent fixture next to Harry Maguire regen Dan Armer.

He has been around the U18 side for three seasons now, having played in the 2024 academy domestic treble claimed under Adam Lawrence.

Mills is right-footed and has the physicality to dominate opponents at both ends of the pitch, being a threat from corners.

Despite his inclusion in training with the first team, Mills isn’t considered an imminent debutant, and this rather suggests that there is still a lack of defensive options, causing academy players to be needed to step in.
