Bayern Munich thrashed Atalanta in their home stadium to take a five-goal advantage back to Munich for the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 matchup. Thanks to goals from Josip Stanišić, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry, Bayern raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead. This massive lead allowed Vincent Kompany to bring on Alphonso Davies in the second half.
Unfortunately, Davies was subbed off in tears after a measly 26 minutes. In stoppage time, Musiala left the pitch on his own and probably would have re-entered the match if it had lasted any longer. To add insult to injury, Bayern conceded a goal in the dying seconds and Jonas Urbig appeared to show signs of a concussion.
”Phonzy and Jonas are injured,” said Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia). “Regarding Jamal, I’m not sure if it’s something that will keep him out. I don’t want to speculate too much. It has to do with his reintegration and his foot. He’s had some very good days and other days where he feels less well. We’re in constant exchange. I’m not worried at all about Jamal. He’ll be back to his absolute best. Until then, we have to consider what’s best for him. As for Jonas and Phonzy, we have to wait for the tests.”
With Manuel Neuer out for another couple weeks, Urbig’s injury is the immediate concern. Kompany will have to turn to 37-year old Sven Ulreich or 16-year old Leonard Prescott.
Musiala should be fine by the Leverkusen match this weekend. With Stanišić and Konrad Laimer both healthy, Davies should be allowed to fully recover.
