UEFA consider super-rare punishment not seen since 2019 that could benefit Real Madrid

The UEFA Champions League round of 16 is heating up.

European football’s governing body, UEFA, are reportedly considering a rare punishment that could benefit Real Madrid.

On Wednesday night, Madrid welcomed Premier League giants Manchester City to the Bernabeu.

It turned out to be a wonderful night for Los Blancos, with Federico Valverde stealing the show by scoring a hat-trick to secure a 3-0 win for Alvaro Arbeloa’s men.

Pep Guardiola’s team will need to produce their best performance of the season next week if they are to keep their Champions League dream alive.

Looking ahead, Madrid could take on Bayern Munich in the quarter-final if they manage to get through against City.

In what could be a huge boost for the 15-time winners, UEFA are reportedly considering action against Bayern.

During Bayern’s 6-1 first-leg win over Atalanta, duo Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich were booked for time-wasting.

However, the pair’s yellow cards have apparently been put under the microscope.

With Bayern 6-0 up at the time, Olise and Kimmich were booked, ruling them out of the second leg, which can now be considered a dead rubber.

This also means that the pair will not be at risk of a suspension for the first leg of the quarter-final.

As per The Sun, UEFA could look into the booking and if they find Olise and Kimmich guilty of getting yellow-carded on purpose, they could be punished.

Real Madrid duo Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos were found guilty of intentionally picking up a yellow card to get a timely ban.

As a result, they were handed an extra match’s suspension.

Ramo’s ban came in 2019, with Carvajal punished during the 17/18 season.

It was claimed that Ramos admitted he would “be lying if I said I didn’t force” the yellow card.

If Olise and Kimmich end up getting banned for an extra match, Madrid will be handed a big boost in a potential last-eight clash.
