Royal Fans React As Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Movie Projects Are Reportedly ‘In Limbo’ After Netflix Cuts Ties With Her Lifestyle Brand

There seems to be more bad news for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, just a few days after reports surfaced that the couple may be next to lose their royal titles.

As well as also facing criticism online for their recent humanitarian trip to the Middle East at the end of last month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now seemingly dealing with another setback, after it has emerged that some of their film projects are “in limbo.” Keep reading for the latest info…

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle’s Project Delays

According to Page Six, Prince Harry and Meghan’s movie projects with Netflix are currently not moving forward – “in limbo,” to quote the outlet – which industry insiders say is not a great sign.

One of the projects fans have been expecting for years is Meet Me at the Lake, a film adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel. Netflix reportedly paid around $3M for the rights to the book, with the intention that it would be produced through the couple’s Archewell Productions company.

However, despite the deal being announced in August 2023, Page Six reports that the film is still classed as being ‘in development,’ with no director attached and no cast announced. “Three years in development for a movie like this at Netflix isn’t good,” a well-placed Hollywood source reportedly told the outlet.

Another project that appears to have stalled is an adaptation of Jasmine Guillory’s romance novel The Wedding Date, which the Sussexes announced they were developing back in September. According to reports, little progress has been made on that project either.

Meanwhile, their documentary Cookie Queens, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, has reportedly not yet secured a distributor or streaming platform.

Internet Reactions

As expected, the internet had a lot of thoughts about their projects, with many people unsurprised by the failure…

“They are boring, entitled, and put no effort into projects. No wonder they fail at everything,” slammed one person in the comment section of a Page Six article. “Well then, MeGain, The Duchess of Nowhere, Nothing, Nobody and Salmonella and Hairy, The Prince of Moan, Groan, Wince, Complain and Accuse have yet another floparoo to their credit! No surprise there!” exclaimed a second.

“Their house of cards is crumbling,” declared a third, as a fourth said: “The talentless grifting duo have got NADA, with Netflix or any other streaming service. It’s been 3 years with the Fortune novel and still nothing?”

“These disaster tourists really do have the reverse Midas touch,” commented a fifth, as a sixth quipped: “Ok Netflix if you have given up forcing these two on us, I think I can subscribe to Netflix again.” A seventh chimed in: “Harold’s biggest accomplishment is being born and Meghan’s biggest accomplishment is marrying Harold. It’s not surprising that they can’t get anything done.”

Netflix Cuts Ties With Meghan Markle’s As Ever Brand

The news about the Sussexes’ projects being in limbo surfaced shortly before it was revealed that Netflix had ended its partnership with Meghan’s controversial lifestyle brand, As Ever. The brand originally launched with support from Netflix’s consumer products division, but it will reportedly operate independently moving forward.

Netflix released a statement about their parting of ways, saying: “Meghan’s passion for elevating everyday moments in beautiful yet simple ways inspired the creation of the As Ever brand, and we are glad to have played a role in bringing that vision to life. As it was always intended, Meghan will continue growing the brand and take it into its next chapter independently, and we look forward to celebrating how she continues to bring joy to households around the world.”

Meghan’s spokesperson also addressed the change, with a statement reading: “As Ever is grateful for Netflix’s partnership through launch and our first year. We have experienced meaningful and rapid growth, and As Ever is now ready to stand on its own. We have an exciting year ahead and can’t wait to share more.”

The development also comes after their original $100M Netflix production deal, which was signed in 2020, was not renewed when it expired in 2025. They negotiated a different, seemingly less exciting, deal last year. They are reportedly believed to have a smaller ‘first-look’ arrangement with the streamer, meaning they can pitch future projects to Netflix even though their original exclusive deal has ended.
