Born into a Sikh-Punjabi family in Lahore, she is the elder sister of Surinder Kaur, famous Punjabi singer-songwriter. Kaur made her professional debut with a live performance on Peshawar Radio in 1941, and then on 31 August 1943, the two sisters, Prakash and Surinder, performed their first duet, Maavan ‘Te Dheean Ral Baithian, for the His Master’s Voice label.
