In late April, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that OpenAI was developing a new smartphone with an emphasis on artificial intelligence capabilities, and now he says that its production could be significantly accelerated.
In the original post, Kuo said that production of the smartphone would begin in 2028, but now the analyst says it will start in the first half of 2027.
“Potential drivers include supporting a year-end IPO narrative and intensifying competition in AI agent phones,” the analyst said in a statement.
Additionally, Kuo says that MediaTek is currently the preferred supplier of processors, including a special version of the Dimensity 9600 built on TSMC’s N2P process.
Among other things, the OpenAI smartphone is expected to be equipped with two NPUs for heterogeneous computing, LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, as well as protected kernel-based virtualization technology (pKVM).
Finally, Kuo noted that if development goes according to plan, total shipments in 2027–2028 could reach around 30 million units.
