Hyundai’s new SX3 model will be sold as either the Kona or the Creta, depending on the market

Despite multiple new rivals, Creta continues to dominate the 4.2m – 4.5m SUV segment in India. Hyundai is working on the new-gen version, which is expected to be launched in 2027. While some international markets will have the new-gen version as the new Kona, it will continue to be on sale in India under the Creta nameplate. Ahead of new Creta’s launch, a set of digital renders provide a good look of what this SUV could look like.

Inspired by Crater Concept

New-gen Creta is expected to be styled based on the Crater Concept. This bold concept was unveiled in November 2025 at AutoMobility LA (Los Angeles Auto Show). It essentially previews the design language for Hyundai’s XRT (Xtreme Rugged Terrain) production models. Hyundai calls it the ‘Art of Steel’ design, which has been conceived at Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California.

Several features of the Crater Concept have been incorporated in the rendered new-gen Creta. One of the key highlights is pixel-style lighting elements, which ensure a futuristic aesthetic for the SUV. Another similarity is the use of naturally flowing horizontal lines across the front fascia. New Creta has prominent cladding on the wheel arches and largely flat panels all around.

Features like blacked-out pillars, angular window frames and a sloping roofline are also similar to the Crater Concept. However, alloy wheels appear more practical and production ready, as compared to truly rugged units seen with the Crater Concept. At the rear, new Creta is expected to get sleek tail lamps in connected format.

Advanced tech including Pleos

New-gen Creta is expected to get the Pleos Connect infotainment system. This was recently spotted onboard a test mule. Pleos setup relies largely on a single centrally positioned large touchscreen to access most of the infotainment and instrument cluster functions and features. For driver-centric utilities like turn-by-turn navigation, speed, etc., a separate compact screen is installed on the dash behind the steering wheel.

New Hyundai Creta is expected to use more premium materials and have a contemporary cabin layout. Key features expected include ambient lighting, premium Bose audio system and leather seats with contrast stitching. Safety features could be expanded, including new additions to the Level 2+ ADAS package.

New Creta – Powertrain options

In India, the new-gen Creta is expected to retain the existing engine options. In addition to these, new Creta is likely to get a hybrid powertrain as well. This will cater to the growing preference for hybrid cars in the country. Creta’s hybrid powertrain in India will be based on the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

Across global markets, the new Creta/Kona hybrid will use a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and a 113 kW (151 hp) electric motor. An AWD version with an E-axle generating 176 hp will also be available. Across select markets, the new Creta is also expected to get a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine and a 190 hp 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The turbo unit is paired with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Across international markets, the new Creta/Kona could also get EREV (extended range electric vehicle) variants and fully electric powertrains. BEV versions will have advanced features such as regenerative braking and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. With more powertrain options, new Creta can capture a larger market share. Features like AWD with multi-link rear suspension could also be offered with the top variants of the new-gen Creta.
