The Magpies were beaten 2-1 by the Ligue 1 side but only have themselves to blame for this one
Eddie Howe’s team did half a job in the Champions League after snatching a first half lead in Marseille – only to throw it all away after the break.
Newcastle grabbed the lead after just six minutes when Joe Willock rolled it down the right-hand side for Tonali, who stayed onside before cutting it across the penalty area. Gordon helped it on before the man in sizzling form, Barnes clipped it into the corner of the net to send the 3,300 Newcastle fans wild.
But Newcastle were rocked after the break as veteran Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed two in five minutes to sink the Magpies.
Here’s how the Magpies rated in France:
Nick Pope 5
A crazy decision to race out and make life easier for Aubameyang and Marseille at a time when the game needed calmness and cool heads.
Jacob Murphy 5
Started OK but his effectiveness wore off before his number came up.
Malick Thiaw 7
One of the few that can hold his head high after this. Some crucial tackles. Man of the match for the visitors.
Fabian Schar 6
Made it easy for Aubameyang. Battled bravely but pace of Marseille proved a test for him.
Dan Burn 6
An unhappy return to the team. Some uncertain moments, a yellow card and squandered chance to equalise.
Tino Livramento 6
Could have done better when Timothy Weah got past him, but you have to factor fatigue into the situation with the full-back just back from injury. Was near the halfway line when Darryl Bakola spotted the gaping hole behind him to play in Aubameyang.
Joe Willock 6
A bright opening and involved in the goal. But slid backwards in the second half as Marseille ran riot.
Bruno Guimaraes 5
Sloppy in possession. Some mis-timed passes.
Sandro Tonali 7
One of Newcastle’s better performers. Passed with purpose.
Harvey Barnes 6
Got Newcastle off to a dream start but then struggled to make an impact. He wasn’t alone.
Anthony Gordon 5
Started well but disappeared without a trace after Newcastle went 2-1 down.
