In a significant policy reversal, Meta has announced that it will cease support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Instagram direct messages starting May 8, 2026. The technology giant, which spent years advocating for a “privacy-focused” messaging vision, confirmed the decision via its official support page and in-app notifications. Users who have active encrypted chats—previously available on an opt-in basis—must download their message history and shared media before the deadline, as these secure threads may become inaccessible once the transition is complete.
A Meta spokesperson clarified that the feature is being removed due to low user engagement, stating that “very few people” were utilizing the optional encrypted mode on the platform. Unlike WhatsApp, where E2EE is a default standard, Instagram’s encryption was a manual setting available only in specific regions. By removing this layer, Meta will regain the ability to scan and moderate DMs, a move that aligns with intensifying global regulatory pressure to detect harmful content and child exploitation material.
For users who prioritize absolute privacy, Meta recommends migrating conversations to WhatsApp, which retains default encryption. Those on older versions of Instagram are advised to update their applications immediately to access the data export tools provided by the platform.
