Alisson has not been included in Liverpool’s squad for their Champions League round of 16 first leg against Galatasaray due to injury.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper felt some discomfort during training, with Liverpool choosing not to risk him for Tuesday’s fixture.
Alisson has made 32 appearances in all competitions so far this season, keeping 12 clean sheets. The Brazilian missed eight games earlier in the campaign with a hamstring injury sustained in October and was also absent for the 4-1 Champions League defeat against PSV Eindhoven through illness.
Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to start in goal for Arne Slot against the Turkish side. Two other goalkeepers have been included in the squad: third-choice Freddie Woodman and academy player Kornel Misciur.
If Mamardashvili does start in goal, it will be his ninth appearance of the season in all competition after joining from Valencia in the summer and would see him start for the fourth time in the Champions League. It would also be his second game against Galatasaray this season, after coming on as a substitute for Alisson following his hamstring injury in the 1-0 league phase defeat to the Turkish side in September.
Forward Federico Chiesa has also not been included in the travelling squad and was not spotted during the team’s open training session on Monday.
A blow for Liverpool
Analysis by Liverpool reporter Andy Jones
A trip to Turkey to play Galatasaray seems to be a bad luck charm for Alisson this season.
When the two sides faced each other in the league phase in September, he suffered a hamstring injury during the game that saw him miss seven weeks of action.
The good news is this issue is not thought to be serious, but enough to be cautious and leave him out of the side for this game.
It is a blow for Liverpool to lose one of their key players for an important knockout game. Even though certain aspects of the Brazil international’s game have not been at his usual high standards in recent weeks, they will miss his quality and experience.
It will offer a chance for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has only featured once — in the FA Cup victory against Barnsley in January — since Alisson returned from injury at the end of November.
He has had to be patient after a mixed spell in the side earlier in the campaign and it will be a test for the 25-year-old to show why Liverpool put their faith in him to become their next No 1. These tough European away games are the stage he will be expected to perform on in the future.
