Hema Malini’s personal life also made headlines. The actress fell in love with cinema icon Dharmendra. The two decided to exchange vows and share two daughters – Esha and Ahana – but never lived together.

But did you know Dharmendra wasn’t the first choice of Hema Malini’s family? Oh yes, you read that right.

Reportedly, Hema Malini’s parents had arranged her marriage with Jeetendra. The preparations were going on in full swing when Dharmendra showed up at Hema’s doorstep.

As per Hema Malini’s biography, Hema Malini: Beyond the Dream Girl, her father, VS Ramanujam Chakravarthy, lost his cool over Dharmendra and said, “Why don’t you get out of my daughter’s life? You are a married man, you can’t marry my daughter.”

Dharmendra also “begged” Hema Malini not to make the “mistake” of marrying Jeetendra.

. I am not in love with her. She is not in love with me. But my family wants it, so I might as well. And she is such a good girl,” reported the Indian Express.

Dharmendra’s marital status was the roadblock in his and Hema Malini’s happily-ever-after. The actor was also married to Prakash Kaur with four children, including Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Hema Malini had also received a proposal from her Sholay co-star Sanjeev Kapoor but she said no to him. The actor was reportedly heartbroken and he decided not to wed and died a bachelor.
