Google Expands Gemini in Chrome to India, Canada, New Zealand

Google has announced the expansion of its Gemini integration for Google Chrome to new markets, including India, Canada and New Zealand.

The rollout will allow users to access Gemini directly within Chrome through a desktop sidebar. This feature enables users to ask the AI chatbot questions about the content displayed on their screen, retrieve information from their Gmail, Keep, Drive and YouTube accounts, and compare content across multiple browser tabs.

As part of the latest expansion, Gemini will also support additional languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil, alongside English and other newly supported Chrome languages.

Google first introduced Gemini in Chrome in the United States through a floating window in September last year. Earlier this year, the company introduced the sidebar-based version of Gemini tools.

Users who receive access to the feature will see an “Ask Gemini” icon on the browser’s tab bar. By activating it on any tab, they can ask questions, summarise content or generate quizzes to better understand a topic. Google stated that Gemini can also operate across multiple tabs simultaneously, allowing users to reference several pages while comparing products for shopping or evaluating travel ticket options.

Gemini can also integrate with several Google services to deliver contextual responses. It can connect with applications such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar and YouTube to access relevant information and provide personalised assistance.

For instance, users can compose and send an email through Gemini in the Chrome sidebar without leaving the browser window. The assistant can also summarise a YouTube video and present key points along with timestamp markers. In addition, Gemini can help schedule meetings or provide a daily briefing based on calendar information.

Users will also be able to use Google’s generative AI tool Nano Banana 2 within Gemini for Chrome to transform images. For example, a user can upload a photograph of a room while shopping for furniture and ask the assistant to modify the image to visualise how a particular item would appear in the space.

Google stated that alongside desktop support, Gemini integration in Chrome is also being rolled out for iOS users in India. When available, the option will appear in the address bar through a page tools icon.

Earlier in January, Google introduced enhanced agentic capabilities for Gemini that allow the AI system to take control of a browser and perform tasks on behalf of users. However, these features remain limited to AI Pro and AI Ultra users in the United States and are not part of the current rollout for users in India, Canada and New Zealand.
