Chelsea are telling Liam Rosenior the same ‘terrible’ thing they told Enzo Maresca

Chelsea legend Gus Poyet has delivered a scathing assessment of the medical interference currently haunting Liam Rosenior at Stamford Bridge, warning that the club has set a dangerous precedent.

Enzo Maresca’s departure at Chelsea was a big talking point, with supporters sharing their displeasure after seeing how he was treated by the owners.

It’s understandable as to why fans were so annoyed after witnessing two pieces of silverware in 2025, coming via the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.

Chelsea wasted no time in appointing Liam Rosenior, a manager they knew they would have no trouble with, given his time under BlueCo at Strasbourg.

And that is exactly how Gus Poyet feels, with the medical department-influenced substitutions still there for all to see at Chelsea.

Gus Poyet slams the medical department’s involvement at Chelsea

Gus Poyet couldn’t believe Chelsea sacked Enzo Maresca, and it seems as if he’s still furious at the whole situation going on at Stamford Bridge right now.

Especially after the fractured relationship between Maresca and the medical department.

“I’m a little confused, and when a coach, for me, independently of the tactics, wins a European competition and a Club World Cup trophy, to lose the job because of other reasons, like sports science, I think it puts the coach in a weaker position.

It puts a weak position on all the coaches, and especially the coaches coming into the club. If the rumours that Maresca is leaving is because of this misunderstanding with the medical staff, then for sure the one who is coming needs to have an understanding with the medical staff.

“So, unfortunately for Liam, as soon as Liam makes a change after 55, 60 minutes, and people disagree, they don’t complain about the change, they complain about that. The medical staff told the coach that they were going to change, and that is terrible.

“Because in reality, if you use common sense, let me make an example that any one of us, we’ve been injured for a while and we’re coming back and we need to play a little bit. And we think, okay, I think it’s right to play Glenn (Glenn Murray the podcast host) for 60 minutes.

“I would say, well, it depends. If we play at home with 70% of possession and you’re standing up front, then we play away at Man City, then we’re going to be defending and running. It’s not the same 60 minutes.

“And from outside, it looks like it’s the same 60 minutes. And that influences a lot of your decisions as a coach.

“I don’t like it, and I hope that Liam can adapt to that as quickly and as best as possible, convincing people of the difference between the 60 minutes in one game and another.”
