Apple WWDC 2026: Siri AI takes centre stage as Cook bows out as CEO – Indian Television Dot Com

MUMBAI: Apple pressed the reset button on its artificial intelligence ambitions at Worldwide Developers Conference 2026, unveiling a sweeping software overhaul led by an all-new AI-powered Siri and deeper intelligence across its ecosystem.

The keynote also marked the end of an era. It was the final WWDC presentation led by Tim Cook before he steps down as chief executive in September and moves into the role of executive chairman. Leadership of Apple will then pass to John Ternus.

With no major hardware announcements, the spotlight remained firmly on software, artificial intelligence and performance improvements across Apple’s platforms.

At the heart of the event was the company’s biggest AI push yet. Branded under the expanded umbrella of Apple Intelligence, the new strategy introduces a rebuilt assistant called Siri AI, designed to be more conversational, context-aware and deeply integrated into everyday tasks.

The upgraded assistant can maintain multi-turn conversations, understand what is currently displayed on a user’s screen and perform actions across applications. Users can now access Siri through a dedicated app, type queries directly and even customise the assistant’s voice through adjustable pacing and expressiveness controls.

Apple said most AI processing will take place directly on users’ devices, while more demanding tasks will be handled through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, a system designed to balance performance with privacy.

The company has also woven AI capabilities throughout its software ecosystem. Safari can automatically organise tabs into topics, Messages and Mail can suggest actions based on conversation context, while the Home app can generate natural-language descriptions of footage captured by compatible smart cameras.

Photography and image generation received a major boost as well. A redesigned Image Playground can create photorealistic visuals, while the Photos app introduces Spatial Reframing, allowing users to alter image perspectives after capture. Generative AI tools can also extend image backgrounds and adjust aspect ratios.

The next-generation software updates, including iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, focus less on visual changes and more on speed, stability and intelligence.

One of the headline upgrades is a rebuilt search architecture that powers Spotlight, Mail and Photos. Apple claims content will now be indexed almost instantly after arriving on a device, making searches significantly faster and more responsive.

Performance improvements extend throughout the operating system, with faster app launches, quicker content loading and enhanced battery optimisation. Apple also confirmed that iOS 27 will support devices dating back to the iPhone 11 lineup, making it one of the broadest software rollouts in the company’s history.

Developer betas are available immediately, while public betas will arrive in July. The final release is scheduled for autumn 2026. Siri AI will initially launch as an English-language beta, with availability in some regions including the European Union and China delayed pending regulatory requirements.

On the desktop side, Apple introduced macOS 27 “Golden Gate”, named after San Francisco’s iconic landmark. The operating system places AI-assisted productivity front and centre, enabling users to summarise lengthy documents, rewrite emails in different tones and execute complex cross-application workflows through conversational commands.

Unlike on iOS, Mac users in the European Union will gain access to Siri AI at launch, provided they use a supported language.

Safety and digital wellbeing also featured prominently during the keynote. Building on existing Communication Safety features, Apple announced new protections designed for younger users. Shared images and videos containing violent or graphic content will now be automatically filtered for users under 18.

Screen Time is also receiving an update, introducing category-based usage recommendations for activities such as gaming and social media. The company said the guidance has been developed with input from child development experts.

The company’s wearable and spatial computing platforms were not left behind. watchOS 27 introduces smarter workout insights and a new GymKit feature that allows heart-rate data from AirPods Pro 3 to sync seamlessly through an iPhone. Meanwhile, visionOS 27 enables users to transform panoramic photographs into immersive virtual environments and promises Wi-Fi speeds up to three times faster.

Throughout the keynote, Apple repeatedly emphasised a measured approach to artificial intelligence, positioning its strategy around practical utility and privacy rather than headline-grabbing experimentation. The result was a WWDC focused less on shiny gadgets and more on making existing devices smarter.

As Tim Cook signed off from his final WWDC stage appearance as CEO, Apple made it clear where the next chapter is headed: not towards a new piece of hardware, but towards an AI-first software ecosystem designed to be more personal, more capable and, in Apple’s view, more private.
