AI chat in browser, 50+ languages supported: Google brings Gemini in Chrome to India

Google on Wednesday announced the integration of built-in artificial intelligence features into its Chrome browser for users in India, aiming to make browsing more intuitive, secure and helpful.

The update brings several of Chrome’s latest AI capabilities, including Gemini in Chrome, to users across the country. The tools are built on Google’s Gemini 3.1 model and are designed to help people search for, understand and manage information more efficiently while browsing.

As part of the rollout, Google is also expanding language support. Chrome’s AI features will now work in more than 50 languages, including several Indic languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil. The features will initially be available on desktop and iOS devices.

Charmaine Dsilva, Director of Product Management for Chrome at Google, said the browser remains central to how people work, learn and connect online.

“The browser is where we get work done, learn new things and connect with the world. With AI built directly into Chrome, we’re aiming to make browsing the web even more intuitive, secure and helpful, and for users to have more proactive and intelligent experiences,” Dsilva said.

She added that India is among the first markets to receive the new capabilities after the United States, reflecting the country’s growing role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence technologies.

AI assistant inside the browser

With Gemini integrated directly into Chrome, users can interact with an AI browsing assistant without switching tabs. By clicking an icon in the top-right corner of the browser, users can start a chat with the assistant while continuing their browsing activity.

Google said the feature can help summarise long web pages, answer questions about content, and assist with tasks such as creating quizzes for study material or revisiting previously opened pages.

Integration with Google services

The AI assistant also connects with several Google services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar and YouTube. Through the side panel, users can draft and send emails in Gmail without leaving their current webpage. After generating the email, users can edit it before sending with a single click.

Working across multiple tabs

Gemini in Chrome can also analyse information across multiple open tabs. This allows users to compare content from different websites or consolidate research into a single view. For example, users can ask the assistant to compare products across shopping sites or organise information from multiple webpages.

Google has also integrated Nano Banana 2 into Chrome. The tool allows users to transform images directly within the browser by entering a prompt in the AI panel, without uploading files or opening another tab.

Security safeguards

Google said the AI features were developed with security in mind. The system includes safeguards such as recognising threats like prompt injection and requiring confirmation before performing sensitive actions such as sending emails or adding calendar events.

The company said it also uses automated testing and Chrome’s auto-update system to strengthen security protections as new threats emerge.

Google noted that the rollout is ongoing, and more regions and languages are expected to gain access to the features through 2026.
